SecondLife "Move's into the Cloud" "2 new 3rd Party Service's offer SL with No Download Required" NOT !!!!

By Avatar JayR Cela

Last year LL made an attempt to offer SL without the need for a download. In other words you could use their Virtual World by simply logging in via your Web Browser. I did not participate in this short lived Beta, but I do know it was pulled rather quickly, and quietly.

Now it seems there are two new companies entering the fray by offering numerous game play opportunities for a variety of  Video Game Developers, LL & SL among the available offerings. The newest one GAIKIA http://www.gaikai.com/  is just entering a Closed Invitation Only Beta stage.

I first read about it here http://www.b2cmarketinginsider.com/consumer-marketing/gaikai-in-beta-phase-allows-play-of-pc-and-console-games-through-browser-016845
And at this point I can make no comments.

The next one however is a little more interesting. SPOON Cloud Gaming http://spoon.net/games/
I First read about this lil gem here http://www.examiner.com/mmorpg-in-national/gdc-insights-spoon-cloud-gaming-launch

First of all you will need to create an account, by suppling an E-Mail Address, verify, the whole ria-a-marole. Next, you have to download a 26.2MB Browser PlugIn File "Spoon-plugin-dotnet.exe" Geeze !! Sound familuar ? ( the SL client itself is only about 30MB ) Read a Huge EULA, Provide PH#, Billing Information,
Install the PlugIn, Log into the Spoon Website, Wait for a while as the Client Buffers itself.

And as if by Magic !! After all that Crap, Whaa-Laaa !!! SL V2.5 is there in all it's horrendous Non-Glory

This is absolutely LAUGHABLE !!

Maybe I missed something here.

If I did, please feel more than free to let me know.

What a Waste of Time !!!

This may be a useful way of playing Second Life on a low spec machine with a decent broadband connection - and may encourage the curious to try it out. The whole idea is that these services enable users to more simply try out different games. I will have a look at it in a month's time when I am back on a high-speed unmetered connection again.

Hi There Hitomi,

The point I am trying to make here is at least in the case of using the latter's service ( Spoon ) you still have to download & install a 26MB file. For each computer you intend to use the service with. Then at least on the initial machine, read through another EULA,wait for the buffer to initialize. This may be fine if your a true died in the wool gamer, I agree with you on this much.

But if that was the case, wouldn't you all ready own a High Spec Machine ?

Personally I don't agree that SL is a game. Although this seems to be changing when you consider the increasing amount of mini games now being featured in the SL destination guide.

Thank's for your comment Sis *bigg huggs*

Well, remember AjaxLife? That was a great tool to connect to SecondLife through a firewall and chat with friends. Sadly someone decided that this site does not meet the policy for TPV. And it worked without downloading tons of suspicious and proprietary plugins.

I tried out Spoon when it was new. That download allowed you to access several softwares. ( Not just SL) I thought it was pretty cool. Could be beneficial if you are on a laptop w/ limited space. I agree that SL is not a game. It is a platform. I wanted to use it for corporate training and for higher education. However, all clients insisted on a browser based interface. I've tried to get info out of LL about there efforts with this. The concierge could not find out any info. I will have to abandon SL and go proprietary. It's too bad. I really like SL.
