SecondLife "What's up With All the Server Dissruption's ?" "MySql & Debian Update's Creating Havoc ?"

By Avatar JayR Cela

Quite frankly, I don't really know for sure, but I can make several educated guess's.
# 1 Oracle ( formerly Sun Micro ) just announced the newest version of the popular Open Source MySql Database platform to version 5.5.10,  http://www.mysql.com/   ( SL runs MySql Enterprise.)  http://www.zacks.com/stock/news/49322/Oracle+Upgrades+MySQL+5.5+ .

Inherently increasing I/O query thread status from 32 to 256 per execution cycle.
( this should produce a huge + in inventory load times ) ( Sadly it's not working out that way )

 # 2 SL is a Debian Based Linux back end platform. This has also been recently upgraded as well. See Here  http://www.debian.org/releases/ . All of the SL Back End Servers are Debian based Linux.

Now most larger companies such as LL, have pre-release access to updates well before the average person's.

So the past several months, LL has taken the high road on steamrolling their Back End Server Architecture  into a more Modular Design. ( supposedly ) This approach, while it does have it's merit's, does not really seam to have been all that well thought out. "Especially for it's Customer's"

Consider those that are actually using the SL Platform for RL money making venture's. We now, and have had to deal with 5 different concurrent server version's running on the main grid's. Constant messages / Avoid Transaction's - Save All Builds. Customer IM Log File's in Complete Disarray.

I could continue on, but I think you get the point.

Who are these Yo-Yo's running this ship ?

It's bad enough SL, the platform is still reeling from the previous and disastrous reign of the nefarious M. Linden and his cronies. Not to mention the complete and utter failure of the horrendous User Interface of Viewer2, prematurely thrust upon us.

But now this constant barrage of server updates too ?

Come on folk's get your freaking act together please !!

I thought we only had 4: main release and the three RCs - Le Tigre, Magnum, and Blue Steel.

There are others, including the one on the Beta Grid and on test projects, but you can't really count those.

The approach they are taking is pretty valid especially when you cannot replicate interaction with such a diverse range of residents on the Beta grid. I do wish they hadn't taken away the 'changing server version' messages as an option though.
