SecondLife : Depending On Who You Talk To ?

By Avatar JayR Cela

I have been talking to several SL content creators recently, one thing that really gave me pause to think twice, is that a number of them don't care. They have been around in SL for years, and tend to see it winding down, so to speak. It's loosing it's Mo-Joe !!

    That's pretty sad.

    Let's see what happen's

SL is going the same way as eBay, started off awesomely raw and frontier and then all of a sudden out of nowhere, bam BAM, a craptacular load of rules then bans then more bans and more rules after another sheet full of rules.

Seller's didn't have to be banned from eBay they started leaving in droves. I'm seeing the same thing with SL. I wonder if LL will ever look at other company's like eBay and learn before it's too late that yes, they might have a politically correct organisation that only allows rule followers in, but the best of the crop left long ago to new pastures and are doing just fine.

Hi there Anonymous

Thanks for your comment, I have only one experience with E-Bay and that was many years ago so I can't really say one way or another. I'll take your word on that though.

Second Life resembles an online game with has hit its mature status. It is not growing, but continues to make profit for it's creators as much of the costs required to develop the game have been already spent. It has a high addicted core of players (I use addicted here deliberately) who will continue to "play the game" for as long as it is up, which can continue indefinitely. It resembled World of Warcraft more than anything else. However, unlike World of Warcraft, there is nothing out there right now that can make this obsolete. World of Warcraft is starting to decline right now in terms of subscriptions at a rapid rate simply because it has new competition. It would cost millions to build and market a virtual world like Second Life -- Blue Mars tried but ran our of cash. This is the point - as long as Second Life does not have a competitor, it will continue to make a profit for Linden and serve as a cash cow for other ventures. I would not worry about SL folding. However, there really is nothing exciting and new -- there may be with Occular Rift one it comes out.

Hi there Eddi,

I'm going to agree and disagree with ya here on a few things, I defiantly agree that SL has hit a mature status, there are tons of back end server stuff currently being upgraded, The official LL Viewer release's are a bit less convulsive than a few month's ago.

I still refuse to use any of them, and that's a matter of personal choice on my part.

The recent TOS changes have or will not have an immediate affect on SL, but believe me when I say it will be a slow death throw. As usual The Lab seems to be Hell Bent on continuously stabbing them selves in the foot. Damn you been in SL almost as long as myself, so you know what I'm talking about here.

WOW is a BLIZZARD ecosystem unto itself, there are very few games like it, Ok there are a few, but for the most part, WOW is in a unique, niche and so far a highly successful marketplace.

What really get's my Gall is that LL thinks they can pull off the same thing with this Desura, or what ever its called, have you looked at it?

OMG / LOL !!! :___)))))))))))))))))

It does not even hold a candle to Steam and what ever.

It's pretty much a joke.

There are a few interesting looking games, but for the most part / Total Thumbs Down!

I'm at the point I really no longer feel connected to SL, besides my partner Cathy and a few friends, there is not much left to keep me here for to much longer.

And I'm really busy in RL, and my devotion to Linux.

Your last point makes perfect sense
" This is the point - as long as Second Life does not have a competitor, it will continue to make a profit for Linden and serve as a cash cow for other ventures. I would not worry about SL folding. However, there really is nothing exciting and new "

Your right 100%. This outright theft and stealing of peoples IP right's, I perdict will give SL about 2 more years of relevancy

Say there Eddi, on a side note, have you tried Path of Exile yet? It is very similar to Diablo
