SecondLife : Are You Thinking Of Leaving ? : Where Should You Go ?

By Avatar JayR Cela

So you are thinking of leaving SL, don't feel alone, I've been a resident for 9 years, and I'm fed up, not with the platform, it's the management and legal team in my opinion that are not in touch with reality. They are not the only Big Game In Town any longer.

Over the years of my writing here on this blog, my opinion's go all over the map, from ranting lunatic to admiring fan-boy, but enough is enough. I'll remain in SL util it actually starts to cost me RL $ or LL simply folds and go's belly up. The creative brain drain has already begun. Mainland and private estates are gradually starting to close their door's and hanging out new shingle's of commerce in various Open Sim Hyper Grid enabled Virtual World Environment's.

Hyper Grid is the key to keep in mind while considering a new environment to explore. SecondLife much like America On Line of 20 years ago is a go nowhere platform ! When the company providing the servers blatantly steals anything and everything you create in their Virtual World. It's time to look elsewhere.

New Open Sim Worlds that are Hyper Grid enabled, offer the widest opportunity for content creators, and regular folks as well. I could continue on and recommend one grid or another, but I'm not going to do that, only you can make the decision. The best place to start is by reading 2 Blog's ( other than mine / LOL  :_))

Maria Korolov's excellent HyperGrid Business Blog @
http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/

And Thinkerer Selby Evans Blog @
http://www.thinkerer.org/Background/BakSiteMap.htm

You may want to also take a look at the Hyperica : A Hyper Grid yellow pages of sort's @
http://www.hyperica.com/

If it's not Hyper Grid enabled, I would steer clear, there is no future in the antiquated Closed Walled Garden approach to Virtual Reality Wolds.

SecondLife : I'm Sick And Tired : Of Sneaky TOS Agreement's : Property Ban Lines : Security Orb's : No Tear Off Menu's

By Avatar JayR Cela

Ya know what ? I only spend about 90$ US here in SL in order to maintain a membership, so it's not really a big deal, but the lab has crossed the line as far as I am concerned. I do have to credit them with some amazing advancement's recently, but the platform is severely flawed.

How many places have you tried to visit lately that are littered with Property Ban Line's and Security Orb's ? Heck at one time it was a kool place to explore, now all I seem to do is not be allowed access or end up getting sent back to my home location from some security device. I'm tired of it !!!!

Couple that with the fact the lab is intent upon screwing everyone that creates content here within their closed and walled garden is a total turn off.

Now we top it off with with 2 more things, A TOS I could not help but sign just in order to log into my main account service page before I signed it, and get this no ability to read it beforehand.

Ok next issue, why no tear off menu's ?????

Crap everyone and their brother-in-laws start up Web App has had this ability for as long as I can remember.

This is a Dying platform, and Ebbe Linden, I feel is way out of touch.

I know I am a lunatic ranter, I have never tried to hide that. You can take what I have to say anyway you like.

This is what I would like to see in SL / No More Security Orbs allowed / No More Ban Lines / Tear Off Menu's finally built into the main SL viewer.

I will more than likely stop posting here on this blog about SL, I just do not see any reason to continue to offer support for a platform so severely flawed and one-sided.

SecondLife : OK I Take It Back : The New TOS : Seems OK : Mabey

By Avatar JayR Cela

First, the modified version limits our rights with respect to user-created content in Second Life by restricting our use “inworld or otherwise on the Service.” Additionally, it limits our right to “sell, re-sell or sublicense (through multiple levels)” your Second Life creations by requiring some affirmative action on your part in order for us to do so. This language mirrors the corresponding User Content License currently in Section 2.4, which has been part of the Terms of Service for years.

SecondLife : Ebbe Linden : Poised For Self Destruction ?

By Avatr JayR Cela

I said this before in a previous post, someone really needs to teach Ebbe Linden the card game of Poker.

The fact that I can not even read the newest Terms Of Service on the Official SecondLife WWW Page before I agree to them is the most outlandish slap in the face and demonstration of utter incompetence I have yet to see.

SecondLife Self Destruct's : New TOS

By Avatar JayR Cela

Here we go again LL screw's up big time, they announce a new TOS on the main account log in page, but in order to read it you must agree to it first. What The F&^% kinda idiotic crap is that ???????

    SCREW You LL !!!!

JayR Cela

SecondLife : New Terms Of Service : RAW DEAL AGAIN !!

By AvatR JayR Cela

Here we go again, another backdoor shafting from LL without any announcement, Hell ya cant even log into your SL log-in page with out signing them first.

Screw that crap, and what sort of idiot's does the lab employ, that just seem to go about their merry way wreaking havoc, and not even allow you to log and get some heads up news.

I refuse to log in now.

Good Byee Second Life.

Get your act together, will ya ?

SecondLife and Health Care : Perhaps You Can Help

By Avatar JayR Cela

My Dear Friend Sister Abeyante , from the popular Second Life Group "Virtual Ability" recently has been sending out request's within the SL community for volunteers to participate in a limited group study related to Health Care within the United States.

I have reprinted it here with her kind permission. Thank You Sister

Blog Article: Recruitment of PWOD

Don’t you wish you could impact US healthcare policy?
Sometimes I do. Sometimes I wonder if those who are making policies ever even go to the doctor!
Time for a reality check? Here’s a chance to have a say! www.HealthcareEquitability.org/volunteer
It’s a national (US) major research project through the University of Pennsylvania Medical School that’s using Second Life as a way to gather opinions, insights, and ideas from us… regular people who use healthcare and probably have great ideas on how well it is working.
Virtual Ability, a very active group in Second Life, is a partner on the research. We are looking for 12 US adults who have used SL for at least 3 months who want to share their opinions via a survey and, if selected, an inworld focus group. Want to help? Check out the link and the website. Or contact Sister Abeyante inworld , or via email at sister@virtualability.org . We need you!

A Faster : Leaner & Meaner : SecondLife Version1 : Oz Linden : My Opinion

By Avatar JayR Cela

It has been several weeks now since the rather dramatic announcement of a SecondLife Version 2 by Linden Lab CEO Eddie Linden, thank goodness all the ruckus has died down, at least a bit.

Time to focus on the leaner and meaner ( current ) development team engaged with maintaining  and upgrading SL V_1, hopefully the amount of bureaucratic office and, political pressure will have been greatly reduced, thus allowing the scaled down team of  LL Developers to integrate upstream TPV strategies, and patch's, at an accelerated rate.

I have not had the pleasure of meeting Pete Linden yet or several others currently involved, I do however know Oz on a casual basis, and I strongly believe he is the right candidate for the new Technical Director position.

I truly hope all of the SL Content Creator's and the Development communities will put their whole hearted support behind the new team.

*Best Wish's* to  "Team OZ"

The Study Of Retro Video Games : How Important Is It ?

By Avatar JayR Cela

I can tell ya from experience, some of the older video games are in my mind the best examples of truly addictive behavioral patterns. Some of the early NES and subsequent platform releases are excellent examples. Super Nintendo, N64.

Sega with the legendary Genesis platform had numerous 1st class release's as well. If you are currently studying game design, you do not have to actually own one of the original machines. Plenty of Emulators are available, as well as game Rom's, although not actually considered to be legal, the Rom's do you allow a chance to study gameing dynamic's, and what actually makes a truly great game.

SecondLife 2 : Not Worth Concentrating On Right Now

By Avatar JayR Cela

I think for at least the next year or so, is best to just not get too worked up about SL-2,,,  although this current platform is old, it still has some life left in it.

SecondLife : Black Dragon Viewer : WOW !!

By Avatar Jayr Cela

Ya gotta try this, plain and simple, semi steep learning curve, but worth the effort.

You will need to agree to an adult something or another in order to get access right's.

    No Big Deal ?

This is a very different viewer for SL

I don't think I have ever seen anything like it before. It is a complete trip.

If u r on a windows box with some gut's, give it a try

SecondLife Version 1 : Everyone Should Keep There Heads

By Avatar JayR Cela

Boy that's an understatement if I have ever heard one, Ebbe Linden's slip of the tongue, last week set off a whirlwind of, more than likely unnecessary controversy within the SL community.

I'm just looking at this from my point of view. It's Pixel's on a screen, what and how you choose to deal with them is your prerogative. If you choose to be creative, this is a  Killer Platform ( albeit the TOS that steals all of your IP right's ) But that is an ongoing story..........................

In the long run the platform as we know it will cease to exist, and it will metamorphosis into something else.

Oz Linden is a brilliant person, and I am sure he has no intention of loosing his job. That is the Go-To person in SL from here on out. Perhaps a few others, Pete Linden is very kool as well, and there are a few more LL folk's I am sure none of us have ever had a chance to meet. This new policy Oz was describing about being more Transparent with the SL community sounds incredible to me. If the Lab actually listens, and then react's making changes suggested by the user base, I don't think we as SL users can loose.

So let's all just chill out.

And Give Oz and his team a chance.

SecondLife : Kirstens Viewer Is Still Alive : Sort-Of

By Avatar JayR Cela

I was just doing some clean-up work here on this blog, checking some of the links and such. Low and behold the Kirsten Viewer is still under limited development, the last post I found was dated sometime in May this year, so I downloaded the viewer to check it out, it worked great for several days, early last week, then this week, phhhttttt!!!!! I can log in but can see nothing but the prim's on my Avatar.

    Oh Well :_(

So much for not keeping up with all the server side changes being made lately.

You can check it out here if you like  http://kirstenleecinquetti.blogspot.com/

SecondLife 1 : Greater Transparency : Hardware Upgrades : New Experience Features : UDP is Going Away-FINALLY !

By Avatar JayR Cela :

It look's as if the Lab has no intentions of slowing down development on the SL1 platform anytime soon, after listening to Oz and Pete Linden speak at the FireStorm Q&A today, I was pleased to hear several issue's talked about in detail.

#1 Greater transparency. In other words, we as users can expect to be filled in more often than in the past          about what is coming down the pipe.

#2 The lab is making some major hardware investment's with the server equipment that handles Group                Chats.

#3  New User Experience features are rapidly being developed, that will allow content creators greater                freedom's in crafting a more immerseve user experience.

#4  UDP the ancient Internet protocol will finally be dumped in favor of HTTP / Yayyyy !
Is about time on that issue.

And last but not least the in viewer based Web Search viewer is going to dump Web Kit in favor of the new and vastly superior Chrome Embeded Framework api

All in all, everything so far is good news.

Now we just wait and see.
