OpenSim Hypergrid : SineWave Space - Sansar : What Do They Have To Offer ?

By Avatar JayR Cela

Let's talk about reality and some of the more outlandish ideas being put forward as progress in the world of Virtual Reality environments.

I am going to start with SineWave Space, If you have been there and are a resident then I am assuming that you have a pretty hefty computer CPU and GPU. that goes double for LindenLab and their Project Sansar, not everyone has extra money to waste on a virtual reality world environment. Let's just take a look at the Vive and Face Books Oculus, these items definitely are niche products that are useful for certain purposes. Medical and Surgery, Aero Dynamic Design Principles, but not much else.

As much as I dislike the Windows 10 environment I have to say that Micro Soft has the right idea with the Augmented Reality glasses they are working towards. This will be a truly phenomenal breakthrough for all of mankind if they can pull it off. These toys from Vive and Oculus are nothing but a horrid blip on the map of the state of the human progress into the next realm of awareness. Mostly these over priced items are limited to people that enjoy playing video games.

Lets get real here, yes the real world can be a horrible place, do you really want to withdraw into a mindless shell of a human being, encased within your headset of a make believe 3D Virtual World ?

    I don't think so.

virtual reality is a bit of a contradiction and misnomer since it only involves one of our senses. I agree with you comment,"Vive and Face Books Oculus, these items definitely are niche products that are useful for certain purposes. Medical and Surgery, Aero Dynamic Design Principles, but not much else."

Look between the cracks of all the hype around VR and it has more holes than a colander, and no one to my knowledge, has solved the nausea problem yet. But in the long term I think it will come... eventually? Like you I also think Augmented Reality will be the most practical way forward once the field of view issue can be solved.

Is any of that really necessary for virtual worlds? I think not. All I ever wanted from SL way back when, was that it to work properly, and now the same can be said of Opensim as well, having lived with the latter for some considerable time now I know a lot of tissues cannot, and will not, ever be solved.

Ironically all the bits and pieces are there on various platforms it's just that no one has ever brought their aspirations down to a reality level with no BS and just made a platform and viewer that works efficiently and is easy to use, I don't care if it needs a powerful PC as long as it can still at least be viewed on a simple device with low resolution graphics.

SineWave fulfils some of the that, I've tried it on the dedicated viewer(Linux version) and the web browser client, but avatar navigation leaves a great to be desired. Mouse steering?, only key presses have any effect, unless it's so well hidden I can't find the settings; why hasn't such fundamental thing been sorted out from the word go, or am I supposed to be wearing a VR headset? All the development seems aimed at virtual reality. But it has 2D graphics to die for compared to SL or Opensim, and that alone keeps tugging be back occasionally out of curiosity. It's most glaring oversight is lack of in world building tools, which was and still is one of the most joyous things about SL and Opensim. It's reliance on Unity so far has left it only available the privileged few, or those with limitless time to learn, to be able to do anything creative.

Hi there Lord / thanks for taking the time to post a comment. Things are crazy for me since my Father passed away. Now as far as Sine Wave Space is concerned. I have tried it several times and ended up leaving totally Unimpressed, you really need some computing horsepower to even have a decent experience there, and Unity 3D still does not have a stable Linux client, as you may know by now, I absolutely refuse to use Microsoft Windows unless I absolutely have too.

As far a Sansar goes, who cares ? I am perfectly happy in OpenSim with the Hyper Grid
