This Blog : Time For A Change : More Linux based Virtual World Coverage and Machinima Development's

By Avatar JayR Cela

Oh Boy ! I have been more and more centered on developing a Video~Audio Content Creation development environment. Designed specifically for use in Virtual World's such as SL or OpenSim grids that are Hyper Grid enabled.

In RL, more and more I find myself spending less time in various VW's  and focused more on a useful UI with the correct programs and and utilities to back it up. I have opened a Source Forge Account, more on that latter, there is not much to see there yet Lol :_)

I am making progress, so that's kool :_) I should be posting more here very soon, perhaps this weekend. One thing I can advise you on is the new Xorg-x11 Nouveau Open Source driver, and the last AGP ( Legacy ) Nvidia  drivers are having compatibility problems and are a complete mess at he moment on a number of current Linux distributions. Hopefully this will be solved later this year.

That's either and issue or it's not, depending on the user.

Virtual World's : Machinima : CinnaMate~LX Studio Project Switches To Sabayon

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well I'm still hell bent on moving this project in a forward direction.

Mostly it seem's to be all sideways and backward stuff / LOL :_)

Anyways I been tossing this SecondLife ~ OpenSim ~OSGrid Content Creation Studio idea around in my head for a really long time.

So let's do it with Linux. I have used various Linux distro's for as long as I can remember, and has been a hobby of mine to screw up a computer, then figure out what I did wrong, fix it, or start over.

 HaaaHaa That's Half The Fun.

     Soooooo !!!!!

I just switched my testing from *buntu ~debian to the FreeBSD based Sabayon 32 bit distro.

I am not to happy with Debian, and I am tired of goofing around with anything *buntu

Sabayon is based on Gentoo, and that is based on FreeBSD ( Mac OS/X is 2 ), and WOW ! I really like it.

My Linux Audio / Video Distro Project : First Screenshot's

By Avatar JayR Cela

Hi there, I'm back working on my CinnaMate~LX  Linux based Audio / Video distribution project. Although I have run into some major headaches, I believe it has been in the way I attempted to merge various parts of different existing distributions. So the project is not dead, I am planning a different approach for the next try. In the mean time I do have some screenshot's of the Mate Desktop version I would like to share with you.

The Basis Desktop has control panels top and bottom, the later slides to the left or right via arrows the bottom panel is set for auto hide.

I decided on Nemo as the default file manager, Konqueror  for easier networking stuff.

Firefox and Chromium Browsers are both standard.

Easy access to my favorite SL Viewer FireStorm and across from that section the trash for easy clean ups after a fresh application installion.

An easy push button Xkill button for forcing frozen programs to go away, and a quick and easy record your screen tool.

As you can see there are plenty of useful A/V capture, editing and creativity tools included so far. Just click on any picture to enlarge. The only problem is some of the plumbing, so to speak is horribly Borked !  So my next move is to try using Sabayon Linux or Mint Linux the pure Debian version. There are a lot of configuration options easily available so far, it's just too bad quite a few aren't working properly. :_)))))

By using Sabayon Linux or Mint Linux LMDE the pure Debian version, both are continuous releases. In other words, your should never require a fresh re-install (at least that's the theory)  Then add direct repositories urls' for each of the special production tools into the system.

For now that is all I have, I was hoping to release an alpha this weekend, but so far have not had any luck with building an actual working installation ISO. I have tried RemasterSys, ( Remaster System ) a supposed Linux backup, distribution creation tool, sadly I must be doing something incorrectly.  Oh well perhaps better luck will shine down on me next week, LOL :_)

SecondLife : Random Video Driver Crash's And Understanding Them

By Avatar JayR Cela

Video~Driver related crash's in SL have been going on for as long as I can remember, wither that be ATI ( AMD ) ~ Intel or Nvidia. And I'm going to be quite honest with you that my personal knowledge of Video Chip~sets is limited to Nvidia on Win XP~Vista~7 and various Linux distribution's, however being in the recording business does allow me to work with other peoples hardware setups.

It is not uncommon for numerous programs to seemingly crash randomly for no apparent reason. I am just making an uneducated  guess here, but to me, 8 out of 10 times it is usually related to a Video~Driver being improperly configured. That's right, just because you have the correct driver installed and up to date, it does not guarantee you a crash free SL experience.

Get to know you VD's settings panel, and gain an understanding what all of the various option's do. It's not rocket science, you can do a web search on just about anything you need to know in order to fine tune it in regards to your specific Video Card or Chip Set.

My Linux Audio / Video Distro Project / Oh My ! ~ LOL :_)

By Avatar Jay R Cela

Well this lil project of mine certainly has turned out to be a great learning experience, at this point I'm not quite sure to do with it besides save all the book-marks with pertinent info / PPA's and such.

It's a complete mess, certain Display Manager lib's seem to be having major conflict's with one in other. And my base for the build are Mint 15 and Ubuntu 13.04, witch are not  LTSR spins, that won't happen again for about 10 month's or so at 14.04. Also Mint 15, is not a true Ubuntu release, and seem's to have some odd-ball problem's unique unto itself.

So haa, haaa, ya couple that with the fact I really have only a small clue as to what I am doing, and I ended up with a somewhat dysfunctional Linux Box.

I did find a few great tool's for A/V editing in the process. However I should of stayed to the K.I.S.S. way of approaching this project.

   Keep It Simple Stupid !

SecondLife : Whats The Big Holdup With SSA ( SSB ) ??

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well you can spit it out in 4 letter's, an acronym C.H.U.I. the Communication Hub User Interface. .This thing has turned into a Complete Nightmare for the dwindling and remaining TPV Devs as well

My personal opinion, and believe me this is only my observations. The Team running this project are not unqualified, just complete idiot's.

If you dig down deep into the SL Jira'a / CHUI is completely screwed up, it is such a mess upon belief, it baffles a sane person's mind why this aspect of a usable IM interface was outsourced to a group of people that in my opinion should be qualified to accomplish this task. Unfortunately that is not the case.

We have been waiting for SSA since June / It's now August, and the big hold up is CHUI

And In the mean time Third Party Viewers Developers seem to systematically be just saying the hell with it !!

Open Sim Here We Come !

CinnaMate-LX Studio : My Progress So Far

By Avatar JayR Cela

It seem's as if I am in a bit deeper over my head than I had originally thought. I have also been investigating similar Linux based Distro's / KxStudio & Dream Studio also UbuntuStudio.

It seem's as if my biggest mistake was trying to integrate the option to boot into one of 3 different UI's. / LOL Oh Well, I'll keep plugging away at it, and hopefully have an Alpha build ready to go real soon.

SecondLife : So What's Going On In The TPV World ? Confusion !!

By Avatar JayR Cela

Ok at the risk of being hung out to dry on the clothing line, currently the TPV's are systematically getting screwed.

I really have a very high opinion of Oz Linden, but certain aspects of recent development's are out of his realm of control. There are currently about a half a dozen so called project viewers floating around, and the server team is on a relentless Hell Bent Mission to correct all the crap they are screwing up from one week to another.

So hang on to your hat's, it's gonna be a rough ride for the next few month's or so.

Virtual Worlds : Direct X : Will It Soon Fade Into History ?

By Avatar JayR Cela

OK about only God know's how many computers in the world are running one version or another of Windows, but I'm here to tell ya something.

Windows is a Train Wreck just waiting to happen when it comes to graphic's, game design etc..

Why is that ? It is because some idiot in the Way Back Machine, right along the time Win 98 came out decided to introduce us to...........................

     The Windows Registry

This thing is the biggest pain in the Ass, and certainly created just to drive people to the point of utter insanity. Next thing we knew Direct X was shoved down our eagerly awaiting appetite's for better graphic's. Unfourtunatly this was accompanied with really screwed up Computers after installing and removing various games.

That ain't gonna happen with  OpenGL and WebGL  the 2 of them will win out in the long run.

When MS decided to release Win 8, way before it was ready, they pissed a lot of people off. Not only did they not address numerous problems with accumulating Registry entries, they also embedded DX into the fold. This is why The XBox One will more and likely fail in the market place and the Sony PS4 will reign as supreme Home Video Console for a number of years. And why is that ? / No Direct X crap to deal with. And  no Windows Registry shenanigans  to be hassled about, and somehow try to deal with cleaning out all the accumulated cobwebs.

The Windows Registry is the worst nightmare ever imposed upon any Computer Geek, that is unless you are really into, super brain stuff. I may be a Nut Case, but it does not seem to bother anyone. So thats Kool.

I really like Windows 7, and more and more recently Linux, I have never owned a Mac, I do work with them occasionally. But I am so Damm Tired of hunting for virus's, root kits, key loggers and on and on and on with in the Win Environment I've had it up to here with this crap.

And I have had it up to here with DirectX, Screw It !!!! We Don't Need It !!!

OpenGL and WebGL will do just fine

VirtualWorld's : My Linux Based Machinima~Content Creation Studio On A USB Stick Project V1.0a

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well I'm back again with blabbering away about my newest project. Witch I have decided to name CinnaMint Studio-LX, I still don't have any screen shots as of yet, but I can describe what I am doing so far.

I'm starting off with Mint Linux 15 Cinnamon DeskTop UI 1.8.8 as the base, and added the Mate 1.6  and LXDE  as alternative UI environments. From there I have included the KDE, XFCE, Lubuntu, Gnome 3, and Unity base run-time Libs into the mix as well. Replaced the standard kernel with Linux-Lowlatency 3.8.0.27.15 ( there is a RT ((real-time)) kernel available, currently is a no-go, to many problems with hardware issues ) I have also removed MDM the Mint Desktop Manager and replaced it with GDM the Gnome Desktop Manager. The reason being that MDM is full of BUG's dealing with the Nouveau  X11 generic Nvidia graphic's driver. It's not worth dealing with trying to solve the problem in MDM, so for now GDM works just fine.

Current included standard apps are, Take Screenshot, Kazam, RecordMyDesktop, Record It Now, Sound Recorder, OpenShot, KdenLive, Ardour, RoseGarden, LMMS, XFCE4-Mixer, Sound Converter, VLC, Blender and Gimp.

I'm still struggling with trying to sync all 3 User Interfaces with one in other, in order to smooth things out I will be using NEMO the Cinnamon File Manager across all 3 UI's.

There are a number of other things I hope to be including soon. At this point in time I just want to get the basic stuff working and have all 3 UI's looking and behaving pretty much the same as one in other. So you should be able to easily switch between Cinnamon, Mate or LXDE without to much fuss.

Once I feel that part has been accomplished I plan on releasing an ALPHA, hopefully on Source Forge, I know I said an initial release would not come until December, and I'm holding to that, but I have no problem floating the Alpha's around and hopefully attract some interest and help from like minded Open Source folk's.

Stand By for some screen shot's within the next few days.

SecondLife : Working On Content Creation Projects Using Linux : It Don't Get No Cheaper Than This :_)

By Avatar JayR Cela

The past month or so I have been very wrapped up in a new project, attempting to spin my own version of a SecondLife / OpenSim Linux Based Content Creation Mini Studio Distro. Plug in a USB Thumb Drive and Boot.

After tons of hair pulling and lots of Goggling about, I believe I am getting close, LOL, well at least closer than I was a month ago.

Actually I have been working on and off with this idea for about a year now. The concept is to create an .ISO file you can place onto a thumb drive, minimum of 8GB, using Mint Linux 15, ( 16 ) as the base, boot directly off the TD and either use as is, install it to onto your system as a dual boot, or integrate it into your current Windows environment, using  WUBI  I am planing on all the menu's and panels displaying only the tools necessary in order to create content for various virtual world environments. That's it ! / Nothing More Nothing Less !  Currently I am getting closer to my goal, but I figure December this year at the earliest before I will be ready for an initial release.

Since just about 99.5% of everything Linux is Open Source, the cost for someone interested in this sort of a Work Station set up should be very low if not Zero $$.

I will have some picture's and details posted on this blog as the project progress's. I hope that you will find it as interesting as I do.
