I am very reluctant to post this, but as I have said before, you need to be aware of shyster's that just take your money and run. Open Sim and HyperGrid Are The Future of Virtuality Worlds. I have no doubt about this.
But the build it and they will come attitude seems to have gone rampant, and is really doing more harm than good within the OpenSim community.
There are a lot of well meaning people setting up their own grid's and offering free access, but let's face it, just because you have a 4 core I-7 based computer with a speedy internet pipe does not mean you can possibly even attempt to host your own personal world.
However some of these Virtual Reality worlds come and go on a daily basis, do your research before spending any actual money. And if you are intending upon hosting your own VW then keep this in mind.
You need Big Iron !
