OSPBA : OpenSim Power Boat Association : Things are happening Fast : And We Need Some Help w/ubODE

By Avatar JayR Cela

The past week has been a real trip, stuff is starting to take hold, currently on TheKazGrid the new headquarters building and docking area is finished. I am planning a staging area that will allow various parties interested to have a display area to meet with potential customers interested in purchasing a Closed Source solution  Hydroplane.  Now I am a big time Open Source everything type of Linux nut-job, so you know this goes against my grain in every way. But WTF / LOL !
I have seen some really KILLER ! No Mod, No Trans Hydros recently, everyone is welcome.

Now here's the catch, I am in desperate need of some ubODE Physics Engine guru's expertise help with Standard 256x256 Sim Border Crossing issues on the KazGrid / I give you the HyperGrid jump

  thekaz.ddns.net:8002:ChibaSea1

I have the MadCat 1 Hydro with ubODE , and a JetSki and a Modern Hydroplane rezzed that are Full Perm, if you get some extra time, feel free to stop by. Kazuko and I seem to have narrowed a few things down that may be causing the stalling issue at Sim Borders, and we are seeking other opinions and advice.

I am not going to debate the pro's and or cons of using standard sized sims and border crossing's. I have already made arrangements with 2 other grids to open OSPBA Headquarter operations on Grids using Var Sims. The simple fact is that after Kazuko and I have examined several variations of the limited amount of unODE water based vehicle physics scripts. we have both come to the conclusion that the scripts need some Tender Loving Care and a good bit of Fine Tuning. That being said if you are not busy and would like to lend a hand / Thats Kool :_)

I will be opening a new OSPBA Headquarters Branch 2 next week on another Grid
( undisclosed at this time ) an 8x8 with ubUDE  running the boats with a number of unusual race course layouts. This place you will have to experience on your own, I can not describe it in any terms besides it is like playing a really good video game. The Physics are bizarre yet at the same time realistic.

Next up on my list is that I am in negotiations with 3rdGrid for an OSPBA sponsored location on their new 8x8 Sim running Bullet Physics. As a mater of fact I will be having an un-official OSPBA test run on 3rdGrid Saturday 7-1-2017 from 12:00pm Pst until 2:00pm here is the HG jump address

OpenSim Power Boat Association : Groundbreaking - Day 2 Progress Report

By Avatar JayR Cela

I am on Day 2 of building the OSPBA Headquarters, the layout consists of 4 standard sized sims arranged in a T-configuration, 3 across and 1 in the center bottom of the T, as you can see from the picture my MadCat series of Full Perm Hydro's consists of  8 meter  12 meter and  20 meter configurations.  This will allow for a short, medium and long run races using all 3 water sims for the 20 meter class. The association's headquarters is located at the bottom of the T and is mostly empty. The 3 water sims are pretty much barren aside from the still to be installed buoys marking off the oval shaped course's. The race course itself is  set to auto return, just in case you crash your boat, it will be returned to your inventory's Lost and Found folder.

There is plenty of dock space and an ample spectator area. With the proper draw distance setting in your viewer ( about 360 meters ) there will be no bad viewing seat on the Island.

The headquarter's itself is currently being decorated with a number of pictures of various types of Hydroplanes and hopefully some other related materials.

Unfortunately we have not settled on a landing point for the Sim yet, so I can not give you a working SLUR to HyperGrid Jump to quite yet, that will be coming very soon, however if you are curious and would like to take a sneak peek and grab yourself some copies of my MadCat free-bee hydro's, it's easy enough to find.

HyperGrid jump to our Welcome Area at : thekaz.ddns.net:8002:TheKazLand
Upon arrival open your World Map and do a search for ChibaSea1 and set the coordinates to 202,160,24
this will drop you at the entrance to the OSPBA headquarters, go on inside inside and grab your self a Boxed copy of one ar all 3 of the free-bee MatCat hydroplanes, there are two ReadMe files in the box, please read them. We are running OpenSim 0.9 RC2 with Bullet Physics so sim border crossings are pretty much seamless, but I have to stress this 1 point, if you are wearing a Animation Overrider ( AO )  you must detach it ! Simply turning it off, will not work and cause the boat to stall, similarly if you are using your OS Viewers built in AO, you must turn that off before attempting to drive the boat.

    Hope to see ya soon.

OpenSim Power Boat Association : The new Headquarters : Is Under Construction

By Avatar JayR Cela

This morning I broke ground on the OSPBA headquarters location. It will be on
                                                       TheKazLand Grid

I have been working together with grid owner Kazuko Yoshida for a number of months to prepare the TheKazLand for its primary purpose as "The Water Sport and Recreation Destination" on the HyperGrid. Our ultimate goal is to have all of the publicly available Sim's reachable via the numerous Lakes and Rivers.

There is not much sense in visiting the OSPBA Sim just yet, this may take a week or so in order to get things set up properly. However if you would just like to drop on by for a general look around the Grid, please feel free to do so, The HyperGrid jump to the main landing area is.      thekaz.ddns.net:8002:TheKazLand

At this point in time we are recommending FireStorm as the prefered viewer for our residents, however any current OpenSim compatible viewer is perfectly fine for visiting.

Please be patient, and keep checking back here for ongoing developments.

OpenSim Physics : The ubODE and Bullet engine debate is starting to heat up

By Avatar JayR Cela

The decision on which physics engine to settle upon (ubODE -or-Bullet) as a standard is being openly discussed, and all opinions and use case's are welcome.

OpenSim Power Boat Racing Association : Locations to Acquire and Test Drive the MadCat Hydroplane Series : Part 1

By Avatar JayR Cela

The past few days have shown to be very interesting, several people have contacted me about sponsoring race events on their grids. I am currently in the process of Boxing up my MadCat Series of Hydroplanes with proper documentation and credit to Shin Ingen and the person that did the original design of 2 prims I used, for the Motor and exhaust pipes, from avatar Locked.Semaphore@locksgrid.ddns.net:9000 and one of his Full Perm creations.

This is taking a bit longer than I had anticipated, however everything will be ready by this coming weekend.

The Open Sim Power Boat Racing Association : 2 Headquarters Locations and 3 Boats TBA Soon

By Avatar JayR Cela

I am a very big fan of Hydroplane racing, and thanks to the generous contributions of open waterways and land area on both 3rd Rock Grid and The Kaz Grid, and some store space donated by Lani Global on OSGrid I am starting to get the ball rolling. My first 3 boats are untextured and ready to be customized. All three are using a Bullet physics script created by Shin Ingen, and slightly modified for the seating position in the Midget model.

Now the big test is going to be a comparison between the OpenSim 0.8.2 and 0.9.xx series of the OpenSim Grid. The Kaz Grid is currently running with OS 0.9.RC2 with a very spacious lake area made up of the standard 256x256 sq. meter regions, and 3rdRock Grid is opting for the Var Sim design.

One thing I have found right off the bat is crappy scripts perform differently BIG TIME ! We had a boat that worked great on the 3rdRock Var Sims and barely worked at all on the Kaz Grid standard regions, it would stall or stutter every time the vehicle came to a border crossing.

This new Multi Grid Group I am proposing is open for suggestions, the only rule being that the engine scripts have to be Open Source. I have yet to be convinced that Bullet or ubODE physics is the way to go, however most people I have spoken with tend to lean in the Bullet physics camp.

I have 3 Hydroplanes that are going to be freely available later on today at 3 HyperGrid Locations.

They are far from perfect and are not intended to be. I have designed them to be modified to your hearts content.

Please stay tuned, as I will be Boxing them up for distribution, and posting some locations on the HyperGrid where you will be able to rezz them and have some fun.

OpenSim Power Boat Racing Association : My Idea's for Cross-Grid Competition : and setting a Physics Engine Standard

By Avatar JayR Cela

I have an idea I would like some opinions on, please bear with me while I explain.

Growing up in the state of Michigan USA during the 1960's and 70's the big events of the summer season was attending the numerous Hydroplane racing events throughout the state. My family and friends would drive for hours just to be able to attend some of the more prestigious and spectacular races, the biggest daddy of them all was, and still is the APBA Gold Cup ( American Power Boat Association ) on the Detroit River just off the shores of historic Belle Isle. It is a fantastic and exciting spectator sporting event, watching man and women, struggling against a machine and skimming bare inches above the water at speeds upwards of 120 to 180 m.p.h. Every now and then a driver would loose control and flip the boat or crash into another one. The excitement in the crowd was incredible.

At this point in time OpenSim is trying to cross a milestone within the Physics Engine debate, do we use Bullet Physics or UbODE Physics, as you may already be aware of Second Life uses the HAVOK Physics engine licensed from  https://www.havok.com/physics/ and requires a fairly hefty sum of money to have the privilege of including it within your Virtual World environment.

The UbODE engine has the advantage of physical movement scripts that are fully compatible with scripts that have been developed and fine tuned over the years within SecondLife, Bullet physics on the other hand does not. We as OpenSim residents have several other issues that a Closed Grid such as SecondLife or Inworldz administrators do not have to deal with, multiple versions ( the exception being the SL Beta testing grid ) of the OpenSim Server environment, some Grids are running 0.8.2 and are using Var Sim's of enormous size in order to beat the dreaded Sim Border crossing issue, other's have adapted the new 0.9.xx series and are preferring to stick to the standard 256x256 Sim size, there by avoiding some of the issues associated with maintaining a Var Sim.

I feel it is very important to get this Physic's engine debate behind us and move forward with one agreed upon standard. I will be actively promoting Hydroplane racing event's throughout the remainder of 2017, and some feed back is definitely welcome. The Idea is to sponsor multiple participating Grids in an open competition, in order to compare various statistics  that relate to presenting overall performance characteristics and publish an easy to comprehend guideline.
