If you're like me, you have more than one avatar. An alt. You may use it for any number of purposes, a giver bot, model, date. But whatever the reason, chances are you've run into the same problem I have, cache and settings file corruption by using the same viewer and same configuration file. Have you ever tried to share the same piece of paper while taking copious notes?
The solution is somewhat complex to set up, but will save you from so many headaches it's worth it, to me at least, to invest that initial work. In a nutshell, you must first tell Phoenix to use a unique settings file depending upon the avatar you're going to call up. This means a different shortcut or launcher for each. The only real difference between them is the command they contain. And since you already have one, it's pretty easy to adjust it and then copy it to make others.
Let's start with adjusting the one you have:
Windows -
Right-click on the icon and choose Properties
In the field called Target is the command. Move to the end of that command and add this:
-settings phoenix_YourAvatarName.xml
where YourAvatarName is in fact your login with a period separating first and last name, like mister.acacia. If you have a one-word avatar name, then just do the single name.
Click OK
Now, when you double click on that icon, it will open Phoenix and use a unique file just for that one avatar. Yes, this does mean redoing your settings. I told you it was complex.
Linux Gnome -
Assuming you've created a launcher, right-click on it and choose Properties
In the command field, scroll to the end and add:
-settings YourAvatarName.xml
Click OK
If you don't have a launcher, right-click the Desktop and choose Create Launcher
Set the name and description as you desire
Click Browse and location the Phoenix directory and double-click snowglobe
Add the -settings line from above
Set the icon by clicking it and the navigating back to the Phoenix folder, then double-click the Phoenix icon
Click OK
Same thing as Windows, this will start Phoenix and use a unique settings file.
Linux KDE -
(needs documenting)
Mac -
(needs documenting)
To make things a little clearer for you, rename that shortcut or launcher to include the avatar's name.
To make a second, simply copy the first, rename it and then go to Properties and change the name of the settings file. Easy Peasy.
Now, each avatar meeds a home or, at least, some space in the wardrobe:
Log in as that avatar (one at a time, running multiples at this stage messes it up) and then go to Preferences, Network & Folders.
Click the Open button for the Disk Cache location and create a new folder for your avatar.
Close that window
Click Set for Disk Cache Location and identify that folder you just created.
Click OK and relog.
When you come back to preferences, that new folder should be listed as the cache location. You can get really obsessive and identify a different chat log location if you wish; Otherwise finish redoing your settings and you're done with that avatar.
Repeat these steps to create a disk cache location for the next avatar. Pretty soon, you'll have a desktop littered with icons, so get organized and pop them all into a folder. But even better, you'll have different settings files, different configurations, you can even have different skins if you desire, and you will no longer have issues with cache corruption resulting from multiple avatars.
Got more tips about this? Got additions? Corrections, Smart-ass remarks? Comment away.

SecondLife "Installing a New SL Client" " Proper Removal and Installation of the Prior Client"
By Avatar JayR Cela
Ok this problem pop's up from time to time, for myself it's on a regular basis. If you are a Linux user, then I am assuming that your way ahead of the game, and the average person when it comes to this issue. Mac people, well you folk's live in a whole different world, and I have to admit I don't have a clue. But for Window's user's setting up a new SL viewer can cause untold nightmare's when it comes to dealing with SL, and moving to a new viewer.
I'm not about to delve into a Window's bashing spree here. Some of my best friend's are Window's user's. ( LOL )
The thing you need to remember is the Window's Registry, that son of a gun is a total mess. All sort's of odd stuff get's tucked away deep inside it's murky depth's as you un-install and install various pieces of software. Ultimately you end up with one screwed up computer, that typically runs like a doped up hamster on a lopsided treadmill.
There are however was to avoid this quicksand trap. Especially when it come to SL client software. A total and complete removal, of the previous installation. I know,I know, there are uninstall procedure's and routines, but I'm telling ya flat out that they DON"T WORK !!
You may have removed the SL client, but your Windows Registry is littered with tiny little Got-Cha's all over the place.
All is not lost however, there are some wonderful free tool's available to eliminate these potential problems. And they are free !
#1 a good un-installer
#2 a good registry cleaner
#3 an extra registry cleaner
I'm going to turn you on to them now. Two of them are from IOBit Software.
http://iobit.com/
The third is from an open source developer GlarySoft.
http://www.glaryutilities.com/
Iobituninstaller, this program is a must have for anyone that regularly updates their SL client. It does an excellent job of removing about 95% of any Windows based program, I say 95% because of the pesky registry issue's mentioned above.
IOBit Advanced System Care, another must have for any Windows user, basically this is a tool box, just chock full of little goodies, the main one of interest here is the Registry Cleaner.
GlarySoft Glary Utilities pretty much this is the same as the above, just a different flavor.
First off, removal of the old program. Run the uninstaller, next use both of the registry cleaners. I say run both registry cleaners for a good reason. No program is perfect, and there are always crazy odd's and end's in your registry that the first pass from one program will miss, and the second one will pick up.
At this point you should be all set and good to go.
Install your new SL viewer, log in and wait for your inventory to load. LOL :_)

SecondLife "Using The Correct Video Driver" "Unexpected and Surprising Results Regarding FPS"
By Avatar JayR Cela
About a week ago I managed to trash my main Window's Based computer. It is a 6 year old P4 / 3 gig's of ram and a NVIDIA 8400GS w/512mb. Hardly state of the art, but more than adequate to accommodate a pleasurable experience in SL. So after a week of reinstalling everything I decided to give SL a whirl. ( 90% of the time I am on Linux )
Now I have always been a firm believer in having the latest video driver installed, that is until yesterday. My 4 year old video card worked well with the most current Nvidia driver for normal everyday use, but when it came to SL, UGHHH !!!!
I was barely able to move, things took forever to rezz, and my FPS dropped to a dismal 2 - 4 frames per second. Hardly an enjoyable experience to say the least.
I logged into www.tweakforce.com / the website I usually goto for my windows based tweaked video drivers, and downloaded 12 versions of Nvidia Forceware. The most current being 275.x the oldest 177.x
My results were surprising, with FPS performance in SL jumping all over the map depending upon which driver I was using. 266.x ~ 258.x ~195.x all faired pretty decently. 270.x ~ 260.x ~ 197.x ~ 185.x ~ 180.x were all dismal performers. Now mind you all of these video drivers worked just fine while using normal application's, but when it came to using SL there was a huge difference.
So surprise, surprise, at least to me, the best performance I was able to achieve was with Forceware 177.92
This video driver is approximately 3 or 4 years old, the same age as my video card. Other peoples result's may vary, at least I know if need be, and I have to update to a newer driver in order to use SL, 266.x and 258.x will give me acceptable result's. But for now, or at least until I am forced to upgrade for some reason I'm sticking with 177.92
JayR Cela :_)
P.S. I used a brute force approach during my testing, all variable parameters remained as static as possible. But this was by no means a scientific testing procedure. If you wish to attempt a similar test for yourself, I highly recommend that you are familiar with removing all traces of the previous video driver before proceeding with another's installation.
For that purpose, I use IoBit Software's "Iobituninstaller.exe" it will completely uninstall any piece of software from a Windows machine much better than the standard uninstall procedures currently available either via control panel or the vendors uninstall routine. www.iobit.com

Have some cheese with that whine?
Oh
My
God
It's funny, and at the same time sad, when people complain about a viewer (not you Jay) and threaten to switch to some other viewer if their problem isn't fixed. Especially if they're given the tools to troubleshoot the problem and don't use them or, worse, find a bug and decide they don't need to do the developer's job of documenting the bug.
*rolls eyes*
Just switch already. Quit adding to the lag and drama in the support group.

Creativity and Virtual Worlds " Your Mind Is A Very Powerful Tool"

For as much complaining as I do, my criticisms, and just generally being a pain in the ass.
Ya gotta admit SecondLife is a darn cool place.
For the last year, maybe not that long, ha-h, I tend to loose track of time every now and then.
I have been developing a riverfront project. It is still a work in progress. Currently 3 homes, 2 of them are complete, the 3rd one is close, and the 4th one will be under construction soon.
I just had to share this picture with you.

Subterfuge and Sabotage " SecondLife"

I have been expecting this for quite some time. Viewer2 and project SnowStorm are imploding.
There are only a few people remaining on the team.
I suspect most of them, being professionals, got out of this disastrous attempt to fix something that was not broken in the first place The V1.x viewer, just cut and run.
And before they completely ruined their ability to get another job.

New Version of Phoenix Viewer "Dang This Thing is Crashing Like Crazy"
By Avatar JayR Cela
I not exactly sure what's going on with this newest version of the Phoenix Viewer.
It's eating memory like chocolate chip cookies, has got to be a very serious leak in the code. It may be my version of Linux, UbuntuStudio. I recently switched to 11.04 and have had a number of issue's that are just driving me crazy. So maybe a switch back to 10.10 will fix things.
But seriously, the problems with audio stream's are still there, and I'm really getting tired of having to delete a folder and file, replace them with one's from the 1.5.1.373 version.
Maybe it's just my rig. But this is getting old, fast. If your a Linux user and have some suggestion's, I would really appreciate some help.

Virtual Reality World's and "People's Feeling's Are Real"
By Avatar JayR Cela
Ok this is really not my normal thing I like to talk about when it come's to writing about Virtual World Environments. I pretty much isolate myself from drama.
I have a huge list of friend's in SL. All of them are very wonderful people. We are here for various reason's. Perhaps a physical handicap, could be that they are lonely in RL, or maybe an artistic sort of person. It does not really matter.
We are all here together !
This is our world, we designed it, using the tool's LL gave us.
A long time ago one of my grandparent's said something to me.
"Your Word's Spoken Carry More Weight Than You May Think"
"Once Spoken, You Can Not Take Them Back"
The same hold's true for the written, word's, log files, text chat.
If you are going to be a gossip bitch, or jerk ?
You should seriously consider getting some mental heath advice !

Jiggly bits!
Mister Acacia is online
You didn't hear it first. Well, maybe you did. The good folks at Phoenix have come out with a new version of their awesome viewer. It's 1102 and is pretty much on the heels of 1050. As well as some bug fixes, a security update to part of the sound system, they've added avatar physics. They had to do this because the newest Viewer2 uses it, and if your viewer can't understand what the V2 viewer is sending, their avatar will look Ruthed. It pretty much affects all V1 viewers like Imprudence and Ascent, and all V2 viewers based on 2.4 code. Phoenix is the first V1 viewer to attempt avatar physics.
But watching the group chatter about it, there are so many people who suddenly turn 13 talking about bouncy boobs, butts and bellies. I can't wait for the next iteration where they include male jiggly bits. I think a dancer with a floppy device would be fun for the ladies, don't you?
Read more about the new Phoenix on their site: http://www.phoenixviewer.com.
Also heard in group chatter is that Firestorm Preview 3 (which might be classified as a beta) might be less than a month away. Stay tuned to their group: secondlife:///app/group/7ba4569c-9dd9-fed2-aaa7-36065d18a13c/about . I look forward to it.

Until then I guess we will just have to deal with their childish behavior.

Teaching an old dog
Mister Acacia is online
I've been in SL for just over a year. I'm not the oldest person (RL age) nor the longest living avatar. But I do get settled in my ways sometimes. So doing things the way I first figured out tend to become habits.
One such habit that I broke is the painstaking labor of aligning prims. I talked about that in an earlier blog and it has saved me hours and hours of tedious work.
Enter lesson two, aligning textures. If you build something and all the prims are the same size, oriented in the same direction and offset only by a multiple of its size, then laying textures that have a whole number of repeats per face is a piece of cake. But most of the time you will use different sized prims to create something other than a cube, it will have corners and angles, maybe passageways or doors or windows. Aligning textures then becomes another painstaking and tedious process of calculating repeats or offsets. Ugh.
I found a script, OpenAlign, that makes the process less painful. Drop it into each prim that you want to align textures, link those prims, drop your texture into the root prim, line it up like you want, select that face and do /1align. Easy Peasy. But if you're like me, you already linked those prims to the larger structure. So it means unlinking them from the structure, linking them together, lining up the texture, then linking them back to the structure.
You can also do this in Phoenix. No linking is required, no scripts. It uses planar texture mapping, which essentially takes your repeats per meter function and moves it to the repeats per face area. Planar is not default, so you have to change it for each prim face to be aligned.
// Digression
Why is align spelled with a g? Why is line not spelled with a g?
//
With both of these solutions, I found they only do parallel faces, so you can do opposite walls, but turning a corner doesn't work. There may be other scripts that can turn corners and possibly even line up arcs and other "rounded" surfaces, but expect them to cost a bit.
And with OpenAlign, maybe it was my misreading of the directions but it was lining up all sides of the prim, not just the one i wanted. Phoenix didn't, but that's because I selected the faces to be aligned.
Bottom line, this old dog learned how to line up his textures, and now the walls in his house look beautimous. Not a seam to be found (in the texture, anyway; I still have tortured prims that need that painstaking manual alignment ... ugh).
Does Viewer2 do texture alignment? Imprudence? Kirsten's? I don't know and to be honest I would like to know. Comment with your views.

Good Point's "Regarding Group Chat's"
By Avatar JayR Cela
Both Selby, and Mister Acacia have made some excellent observation's regarding group chat's in SL. Personally FaceBook scares the heck out of me. I do have an Avatar presence there. But that is only to further the future development of this blog.
I do use LinkedIn for professional purposes. However it would be truly cool, if people would take virtual reality worlds seriously someday. Right now that is a risky slope to embark upon. At least for myself.
I need to maintain a professional persona, I'm highly paid for my experience when it come's to working with audio gear. You want it to sound good, you hire me. You want it to sound lousy, oh well, ya hire someone else. Pretty cut and dry decision.
Am I arrogant ? Yeah I guess so, butt you try dealing with musician's for a living someday. LOL :_)
In comparison, I'm very mild mannered, seldom talk, I just make thing's work, when other people can't.
So yes in my own way I am an arrogant jackass. Can I pilot a Space Shuttle ? NOPE !! I can however, operate a recording studio.
With some help of course :_)
Please do not get me wrong, I have met some wonderful people in SL, but there are unfortunately some very odd goof ball's playing in the Virtual World sandbox at this particular point in time.
I simply cannot afford to risk my real life lively hood by being associated with some of the wild nut case's that happen to populate virtual reality right now.
I think Open Sim is the true future of Virtual Worlds, eventually SL will just fade away.
As an example, I pose this question, the Mosaic Web Viewer, what happened ?
You tell me.
Open Sim and OSGrid continue to expand, as SL continue's to implode. I was just reading today LL is dropping region's faster then they can afford too. Ya can only support a loosing money pit for so long.
You may want to to take a look at this recent post by an incredibly intelligent person, Maria Korolov of Hyper Grid Business.

Tech: Group chat is broken. Complain or solve?
Group chat is broken. Complain or solve?
-
by Selby Evans
-
Mister Acacia is complaining about group chat:
-
Thinkerer Line:
Complaining about a problem is more popular than fixing it. And last longer.
-
Group chat is broken. Has been broken for years. Complaints:
- Chat lag so bad it rearranges the conversation
- "Unable to open..."
- "Unable to send your message.."
- And a new one, yet to be noticed
That new one points a way out. You can't connect to your friends on InWorldz or other VR places. That's not something you can expect the Lindens to fix. Not even if you still think LL can fix the other ones.
-
I don't think LL can fix any of these. If LL could fix the problems in the legacy architecture that handles group chat, LL would have fixed the problem long ago. My guess is that LL will resolve the problem eventually by moving the process out of the SL system and onto the web. If they don;t act soon, however, it may be too late to matter. Because Facebook has another solution.
-
The Hobo Helpers group in Second Life has already set up a corresponding Facebook group:
-
Facebook now has Hobo Helpers in Second Life-
As of now, we have not tested the group chat, but we can use the group chat there if we find that it works better than the inworld group chat. Our main interest is in making it easy for new residents and prospective residents to contact us. People do not have to be inworld or even registered to contact us.
-
There was a time when most hardware could not accommodate the Second Life viewer and a web browser at the same time. In the early days (2005), when I opened a browser from the viewer, a lot of stuff got saved to disk before the browser opened. It took too long for me to do it casually.
-
That was then. This is now. I have several gigs of memory and almost always have Facebook open while I am running the viewer. If I run into chat lag in a group I talk with a lot, I will be suggesting that we open up a Facebook branch and use that for chat. My guess is that Facebook will not have problems with chat lag.
-
BTW, my friends on InWorldz can join the FB group just as easily as I can.

Once I solve that, everything should be KOOL :_)

Gotta Love The Lindens

They seem to think like most other corporations now, finding a permanent workaround to a problem instead of a solution.
I'm talking about group chat lag. It's been a problem for a VERY long time, and with more and more users chatting, the problem is getting worse. What did they do? They created an error message that says your message might actually be deleted.
They've dropped plans for XMPP, I assume it's because it wouldn't allow them to put that same error message in nor be configured to delete messages. I've heard rumors that they dropped it because it won't scale, that there's not enough improvement. You know, he says as he throws his arm over LL's shoulder, even a little improvement would help. You've been dinking around for years coming up with other stuff and nearly ignoring group chat. Let's get with it, Linden. Give a shit for once, will ya?

Sometimes a little wrong is just right
by Cummere Mayo
I was hospitalized overnight last night because I collapsed on the Job. I came home to find out that someone was playing at continuing a drama that I had long hoped would just die down. This drama played out in at least two groups while I was gone, one of which I own, the other a good friend owns.
One of my mods is tasked with all issues dealing with this kind of drama. Unfortunately, he did feed the troll at first till he realized what was going on.
But then he cracked down, ejected the *****, (and the other group's owner ejected as well,) and as an extra sweet thing, first reported it to SL, but also having reached a limit that he seldom reaches, decided to really pull an asshole move.
He is the kind that will totally defend those he cares about. I and the other group's owner are two of those people. Another person hurt by this drama I asked him to treat same as me. With that many people he defends hurt or potentially hurt by this person's actions he decided to fuck them over.
He has contacts with a vigilantes in SL. Not the kind that grief sims or anything but the kind that love to mindfuck with people that are total dicks by messing with them specifically and surgically and in creative ways that are just within the TOS.
I should be admonishing him, but on the other hand having someone that is a drama maker that has fucked me and so many others over just feels too good.

Virtual Reality "What's Real ?"

Ok, at the risk of stirring up a whole bunch of controversy, I don't really care, This blog exist's because people read it. And myself and a few friend's continue to post here.
Now let's get to reality, a virtual world is just that, it's virtual, hoverer feeling's are not ?
Feeling's are very real, and they affect people in numerous ways.
Let's say for instance, you happen to meet someone in a virtual world, you become friend's and establish a relationship. Eventually the two of you fall in love. OK this can be a very slippery slope, depending upon your mental stability.
Over the past 5 years I have witnessed some very nice friend's virtually devastated by ignorant and un-feeling jack ass's that just have no feeling's what so ever for a fellow human being.
You know who you are, and so do WE !!!!!

Rambling
OK, it's been a while and I know Jay doesn't like it when guest writers don't write. So, here's some random stuff.
Temp rezzers. Good or bad, I just saved a bunch of prims using temp rezzers. My house is normally 120 prims. I've been doing a bit of work on it, added an extension to the back main floor, dropped in some short walls, prettied up the porch and fixed all the misalignments, skewed prims and short-cuts the builder included, and it went to 149 prims. Woo hoo. But after popping it into a temp rezzer, which replaces the house every 59 seconds, it uses one prim. I don't know about you, but I like that. There is a learning curve, so don't quit from frustration right away. I've been fiddling with them for a couple months and it finally clicked, as it were, a few days ago.
Align Prims. OK, if I'd known about this 3 months ago I'd have not wasted days of manually incrementing X Y and Z parameters at the millimeter level. Edit a prim, Ctrl-Click the one you want to align it with, then select Align in your build window. Click one of the colored cones to align in that direction. It will push all the prims so they line up on the OPPOSITE face - clicking the down cones pushes them all down and aligns them along the bottom. Shift click, and they butt against each other. Downside to this is if you torture your prim, the align tool will line up the prim's untortured parameters - line up a sliced prim and you will have a gap the size of the slice.
Align Textures. Now this is a neat trick. Ever built a wall and you had to use several prims, and the textures made it oh so obvious where the prim seams were? There are free scripts that, when dropped into all the prims of a linkset, will line up all those textures, properly setting the offsets so that the prim seams disappear. Very cool. Like everything else, the downside is that the one I tried doesn't turn a corner very well, so corners will still look kind of wonky. But if you've got a massive wall, like the outside of a house with lots of prims, it is a massive timesaver.
Linux sound. OK, Jay went off on Phoenix because they pulled the 373 release. Many Linux users have found that media doesn't work and hasn't since the 725 release. I'm not sure why, I'm sure Phoenix knows but hasn't fixed it (or can't?). The solution is to grab the llplugins from a 373 build and drop them into your 725 or newer build, and then you get media. Well, Phoenix did indeed pull 373 off its list of supported viewers. But, if you're on the page where you'd get that build, just scroll down a little more and you'll find it. It's listed as an additional download to fix problems. It's the full download, all 40MB, but I don't recommend running it as there have been tons of changes since then.
Unable to connect to a simulator. I fell victim to this the other day. Turns out it's LL's systems that cause it because it allows users to put characters into group tags that other LL servers can't recognize. In fact, those other servers tend to barf, and the user cannot log in. The fix is to not use those characters. Easy way to tell if a character can be used is to add it to a role that no one uses, then close the group window and relog. Then look at that role again. If the character is replaced with a question mark, it will bar anyone wearing that tag from logging on. Why LL decided to allow unrecognized characters in the first place, I don't know. But there you go.
Let's see *rifles through his notes* I don't see anything else to report.
Oh yes, there is one thing
Viewer2 sucks rocks.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled ranting.

Ok Try to Shut Me Up !!!!!

Now I'm Pissed, Ya can't shut me up. This is my Blog. I'll say and post what ever I feel like here. LL tried to shut me down. Some kind of non payment info on file bull crap. When I see some sort of legal notification in the mail. I'll take appropriate action.
Until then I will continue to completely bash Viewer2 for the piece of garbage that it is, may it rest in piece.

Why Viewer2 will Fail
By Avatar JayR Cela
Well there are a number of reasons,
#1 a horrible color scheme
#2 no one except noob's like it ( hmm they don't know any better )
#3 The team running the project don't know their head from a hole in the ground.
#4 I've been banned from attending SnowStorm Meeting's
#5 LL has wasted so much money into this piece of crap they can't stop now, eventually it will cease to exist.
#6 Once they wake up.

Virtual World's "Imprudence Make's a Major Bold Step Forward"

Hmm, a recent visit to the Imprudence Viewer homepage indicates some very radical changes, Holy Smokes, they got enough warning's there to scare off all but the most intrepid virtual world spelunker's. Sound's exciting.
However it's getting late, and time for sleepy's, First thing in the morning I will take the new Imprudence ( KOKUA ) viewer for a spin around the Elvin Clan's new InWorldz Realm of 16 new Sim's. Should be fun. Only question I have. Is do I need pointy ear's ?

Phoenix Viewer and Streaming Audio using Linux
By Avatar JayR Cela
Ok I'm a staunch Phoenix user, as far as building tool's go, ya can't beat it. However I happen to be a Linux person, Ubuntu, the Studio version. One thing really piss's me off about Phoenix, streaming audio.
It don't work. Why and the heck can't they fix it ?
They claimed to have fixed it in the 1.5.5.150 version for Linux, NOPE !!!!!
And to add insult to injury / they have removed the only fix 1.5.1.373 from the download page. In order to get streaming audio to work with the new version of Phoenix, ya gotta do this.
#1 find it via Google Search http://code.google.com/p/phoenixviewer/downloads/detail?name=PhoenixViewer-i686-1.5.1.373.tar.bz2&can=2&q=label%3AOpSys-Linux
#2 Open the darn thing, goto your BIN folder, replace the llplugin folder .150 with the one from .373 and also replace the SLPlugin file.
Now this really piss's me off, I regularly bash LL for inept and screwball mistakes, now I'm bashing Phoenix. Hey you guy's screwed up big time on this one. Maybe its just my flavor of Linux.
But for crying out loud don't proclaim to have fixed something that is still broken, and to add insult to injury, ya removed the fix from your download page.
Wow :(

Wow, I started this blog thing on a whim, ended up turning into a Viewer2 bashing vendetta. I will be exploring there this week. I'm really busy with RL commitments at the moment. I hope you all understand.

No More Viewer2 Bashing "Until V2.8.x"
By Avatar JayR Cela
Yep ya heard it here first, I ain't gonna bash Viewer2 until the 2.8 release, actually I hope they just shit can the whole project and move forward with Viewer3.
When LL finally gets around to V2.8.x I will be right here, to take a look.
Wow if I had a job writing crappy code, I'd be rich.
And for all the folk's out there that I have offended with my post's,

Nothing to Do? Not so for the Elf Clan.
Nothing to Do? Not so for the Elf Clan.
-
By Selby Evans
-
JayR Cela has been looking around the OpenSim world recently and posted this observation:
-
-
And that is a good summary of my experiences in the OpenSim world. Yes, it is much cheaper. But land in west Texas in a lot cheaper than land in Manhattan. Do you think that will persuade people in Manhattan to move to west Texas?
-
I went over all that in a discussion of the network effect a while back:
-
===========================
Can LL continue to depend on that network effect?
-
The network effect in Second Life is lumpy, composed of many communities. And the people in those communities are mainly interested in connecting with each other. So they are not all that dependent on the large network of Second Life. Here is the story of one such community.
It is with great regret that the Eldars of Elf Clan announce the closing of ElvenMyst as of May 18, 2011.
-
Inworldz staff has been very friendly, supportive and loyal to our group. We can certainly grow there. During the past year we have gone from two sims to sixteen.
-
I made some further comments here:
-
So I hope JayR will drop in on the Elf Clan in InWorldz and see if they are finding something to do.

Ok here we go again, lets be rational and take a good, long, hard look at Viewer development in SL, Imprudence, Phoenix, Singularity, and a few other's. All of them are rock solid, prime example's of what a virtual world client should be. Then along comes Viewer2, the perfect example of everything wrong that some Nimrod idiot figures we all need. Oh boy, give me a ticket please, I am just dying to ride this paycheck gravy train.

Why Does Viewer2 Stink and People Hate Me ? "And Still Read This Blog"
By Avatar JayR Cela
Hmmm ! I guess it is because I expose the truth, Open Sim is in it's infancy, and i criticize the heck out of it. Viewer2 on the other hand is a complete, and very bad joke. Everyone involved with this piss poor project need's to be shown the door. And don't let it hit ya in the ass on the way out.
And guess what ?
I speak from my heart. If Poop stink's, It stinks. Open Sim will eventually kick LL's ass so far down into the ground, they will have to take their sock's off to see their toenails.
Recently I have come under attack in world from folks that are seemingly to cowardly to post reply's to my unrelenting attack's upon Viewer2.
People dissolving friendship's, sending me nasty message's.

SecondLife "Only Fool's & Noob's Use Viewer2"

Ok all you crybaby's out there, bring it on, I dare ya to leave a reply post here on this blog why you actually like Viewer2. Come on, give me a reason to cut you to shred's, on the non-merits of why this piece of crap even exist's.
I have clearly stated in the recent past I will not bother to review this hubris again until v2.8.x comes along. How much are you willing to bet that ?
#1 Muting group chats will still be unavailable.
#2 Reading my chat and log file's will still be broken.
#3 The crappy color scheme, murky green and dark grey, will prevail.
#4 The idiotic sidebar will continue to haunt us.
The only remaining feature that has not been back-ported into the Viewer 1.x series is Media on a Prim. Big fricking deal ! Who cares ? Until then the Lab continues to pour more dollars into this dank, decrepit money pit.
Now LL's new CEO recently announced with great pride, that the new improved V2 will feature such wonderful fabulous features such as, a new log-in screen, with current news, events and grid status displayed. Boy what rock has he been been hiding under ? This feature has been available on several TPV's for age's.
The lab again decided to kill the XMPP group chat initiative, gee I wonder why it works so well for Google, Yahoo, AOL, MicroSoft and Apple etc.. According to the genius's at LL it's not scalable enough.
Mesh, well they been talking about this for age's too, ya ever wonder why we are limited to 10 x 10 x 10m prims, when every Open Sim grid allows at least 64 x 64 x 64m prims ? It's because LL wants you to rent you more land, thereby increasing your prim allocation. It took people like OpenSource Obscure, who got the original idea from the nefarious no-goodnik Plastic Duck to bless us with MegaPrims.
So now we have the proud statement from top brass at LL
"we have seen a significant improvement in new and completed daily registrations when compared to recent months and an increase in new users exploring Second Life."
Hmmm, I wonder how many of these folk's will stick around after a day or two ?
Now LL has 2 saving grace's, a server team that really rock's, these folk's are kicking some serious butt, big time. Sim border crossings are now seamless, unless you happen to hit a corner. ( I doubt if anyone will ever be able to solve this problem, managing to get 4 servers to complete a handshake in a timely fashion is truly a holy grail in the world of IT ) And also a great Destination Guide, there are so many cool user created sim's to visit. And I'll bet ya 10$ to a Doughnut, not one of them was created with Viewer2. It's a piece of crap. Doomed to failure from day one.
Will I continue to bash V2 ? You can put your money on it. Will I continue to heap praise's on Phoenix & FireStorm, Imprudence, Singularity, Kirstens, and Dolphin ? You bet I will !!
It's time for LL to get out of the client software business, they obviously peaked at
V 1.23 & SnowGlobe.

Ok we keep hearing about Open Sim, and all it's wonderfulness, and admittedly I have just begun to explore this vast virtual universe. But so far I have to say I am completely underwhelmed. There are some neat places to go look at. But for the most part, it's empty of people and activities.
There is nothing to do, it's just boring. Give it a few more year's, thing's will change. In the mean time I will suggest that you establish a presence in this ever expanding Virtual Universe. Your existing SL name is a good place to start, if you wish to have a uniform identity across multiple worlds.

Ok, I hate to diss anyone, besides Viewer 2 and the monumental failure , ineptness, lack of concern for long time residents, hiring the wrong people to fix something so horribly broken to begin with. And the total arrogance of the project leader banning me from his meeting's.
Yeah he is a smart guy, also a very touchy and insecure individual when it come to someone criticizing, his monumental success's and failures.
Mr. Oz in all his wisdom BANNED Me from his meeting area's, OUCHH !! Guess he just can't take the heat.
So lets take a look at SnowStorm, it's a complete flop. A total piece of CRAP ! Why do you think that the Open Sim Community won't touch this garbage with a 10 foot pole ? They are using the only logical choice. The IMPRUDENCE Viewer.
Oz I have read your profile , and your SnowStorm blurb about all the wonderful things you have accomplished during your life, yippee.
You may be a legend in your own mind, but then, why does Viewer 2 still SUCK ?

3rd Rock Day 2 "Designing My Avatar"
By Avatar JayR Cela
One of the coolest thing's about exploring various new Open Sim based grids, is designing your new Avatar. Yesterday I stopped by the free-bee area and picked up enough items to do just that. One of the most important things to remember is that your shape is critical. Seldom have I run across an out of the box shape that suit's my taste's. Even the best of skin's can look awful if you don't take the time to adjust your shape, ( nose, chin, torso, legs, shoulders, etc... ) with that being said. I spent about an hour this moring doing just that. Here are the results.
Here's me as a total noob :_)
So let's get started.
The finished product / LOL :_) Be sure to name and save your new avatar & outfit before logging out.
Ok I'm all set and ready to start exploring. Join me again tomorrow evening as I take a look around 3rd Rock.

Back to 3rd Rock "My 1rst Shopping Trip" on this "Open Sim Grid"
By Avatar JayR Cela
After a very intense week in RL and SL, and battling with an unusually nasty spring allergy season, I have finally found some time to revisit the 3rd Rock Open Sim grid. This time my only purpose will be to visit the new-bee area and grab some free-bee's.
One thing the several OS grids I have visited so far seem to have in common. They are practically deserted. I believe this will gradually change over time. After all Open Sim it's self is still in the Alpha stages of development. Never the less, in visiting any new grid, the most important first stop should be an easily accessible free-bee shop. So is no surprise to find 3rd Rock makes this a total no brainier.
You can never really expect to much when it come to free items, but by comparison the InWorldz grid has a much larger selection. Neither even comes close to the vast variety of available free-bee's to be found in SecondLife. But's that would be akin to comparing apples to oranges.
Everything is easy to find from the main welcome area.
A good enough variety is available in order to get ya started.
Look's as if some free furniture is available as well.
Ok, so here is what I look like now, a total noob / LOL :_)
I'll find some time this evening or tomorrow to make myself look respectable, and start my exploring of the 3rd Rock grid during the course of this week.
Thanks for your patience during my absence from this blog, the past 7 day's or so. One RL project and a major rush job in SL, have kept me very busy recently. Now I need some sleep.
