Is SecondLife Worth It ?
By Avatar JayR Cela
This is difficult for me to say, but I am going to do it anyway. In the 6 + years I have been here in SL, I have managed to make a number of very nice friends. It does not matter to them that in RL I am 54 years old and male, my SL Avatar is a 30 something female and married in this crazy world to the same virtual woman since 2005.
For that matter I am female in numerous virtual worlds, and I have always been up front about this. People just seem to get along with me because I am myself. But as I look at a number of recent turns of events in the SL Virtual World Landscape. I find myself saddened by the fact that large portions of these people no longer bother to venture here.
As far as romantic relationships in a Virtual World environment are concerned, ya cant play with someone's heart and emotional state of mind, without some sort of unintended fallout. So many of my girl friends here in SL have had their hearts broken within the past year.
It makes me start to wonder ?
Is Second Life Really Worth It ?

The curtain begins to draw on V1 viewers.
Mister Acacia is online
Linden Lab has officially started the end of the V1 viewers performance. Their own V1.23 is no longer available for download. LL have said recently that they will be "breaking" some services that V1 viewers rely on, including the inventory system.
What does this mean? Simply put, you could still log in with a V1 viewer, and you could probably see some textures and get around, but without an inventory you can't change your appearance.
And before you suggest it, don't. V1 developers likely will not "fix" their viewers. And if someone does, don't expect others to follow.
V1 is on it's way out of the theater, kids. The curtain is being drawn. No amount of bawing or threats to leave are going to keep this show going.

SecondLife : My Biggest Complaint's About Viewer3
By Avatar JayR Cela
The inability to read Viewer 1.x chat log's with out having to open a separate text editor, not being able to selectively mute individual group chats, and not being able to incrementally adjust my jewelry and attachment's via numbers while in edit mode.
You can do all of these things with the Phoenix and FireStorm Viewers, so come on all you other Third Party Developer's. Get with the program !

Virtual Worlds : The Cool Viewer 1.2.6.3 : With Mesh Deformer Alpha
By Avatar JayR Cela
I don't know how or why Henri Beauchamp does it, but the SL V1x viewer series is still alive and kicking. Personally I would like to see V1 just go away, die and everyone of the TPV's just adopt the Viewer3 engine. But apparently that's not going to happen just yet. Make no doubt about it though, eventually Linden Lab will cut off various server side feature's and function's of any and all V 1.x based SL viewers.
Memory consumption has been improved, inventory fetching has been back ported from V3.x to work in chunk's as opposed to individual file loading ( This Is A Big Improvement ! ) and Qarls alpha version of the Mesh Deformer has been included as well. Plus there are a bunch of little extra goodies that you will just have to find for yourself.

There are also quite a large number of different Virtual World Grids preconfigured and ready to go.

FPS performance is very good, and the camera control has the nice addition of an instant front view check box option too. The lag meter has been improved to show not 2 but 3 statistic's, Memory Usage, Packet Loss and Bandwith.

And let's not forget the Mesh Deformer addition. I did not try it, but let's face it Mesh is still a Mess in SL.
Way to go Henri, now if someone could just combine your viewer with Phoenix, we would truly have the ultimate V1.x solution. You can take a hop on over to Henri's web site here.

SecondLife : The Catznip Viewer 3.2.0.R4 Everyone Has Their Own Idea's
By Avatar JayR Cela
Everyone has their own idea of what makes a great SL viewer. Oz linden has laid a very solid foundation for a number of talented people to build upon. That brings me to semi reviewing the Katznip Viewer for SL by Kitty Barnett.

Is it my cup of favorite tea ? NO ! But that does not mean you won't like it. You can download it from here http://catznip.com/downloads/

By Avatar JayR Cela
Ok I know there are a lot of Die Hard Phoenix user's out there, I count myself among them. If you have been following this blog recently, you are well aware of the fact that I am a very big Linden Realms supporter. So the question is, can you use the Phoenix Viewer in order to participate in all the fun ?
Yes you can !

SecondLife : Selecting Icons Only Option : Customize Your Viewer3
By Avatar JayR Cela
Thanks to Hitomi Tiponi for this tip. The other day I was complaining about Viewer3 and the haphazard UI. Well you do have quite a few customization options available. Today I will be using the Dolphin Viewer for this demonstration. I will attempt to make the User Interface look and feel as close to FireStorm as possible. Why do I choose FireStorm as my standard ? Because it is in my opinion the best and most logically lay'd out . So lets see what we can do here.
First of all you need to have an understanding of several basic concept's. V3 has been built from the ground up for customization. Yep that's right, you can pretty much make it look and work just about anyway you like. It Just takes a little bit of time in order to do so.

The standard layout is somewhat not to my liking. But that's not a big deal, it is very easy to change. First click on the ME menu. Then select Toolbar Items, you can then choose to clear all of the buttons.
At this point it is just a matter of drag and dropping what ever you feel that you need. If this sounds confusing to you, don't feel bad. With a little bit of practice you can easily make SL work exactly the way that you would like it to.

SecondLife : The Importance Of Third Party Developers
By Avatar JayR Cela
Ok I have been personally criticized by several friends about my support for Linden Realms. Yes I know that in it's current state, it is very lame as far as Virtual Games are concerned. But my friends and maybe a lot of other people seem to be missing the point. Linden Realms is the first positive stepping stone for some very cool new things that can happen here in SL.
In my mind, as I see it, Linden Lab is not in the business of creativity. They are however in the business of providing a stable platform for people that are creative.
Please believe me when I tell you that, I have been to and explored numerous RPG's and Open Sim virtual environments. At this point in time, nothing even comes close to the SecondLife experience.
That is why I am so excited about Linden Realms, yes right now it is in the infant stages of evolving. Just as a baby progress's from crawling to walking.
LR will be a big boost to LL, as long as they don't blow it !!!
We need Third Party Developers !
The dedicated people with a passion and an intense love and willingness to spend their spare time in order to enhance this virtual paradise.
Without them, SecondLife would wither and die
