For right now, they are merely an amusement, some of them are very cool, the fact that you do not have to download anything and the depth of game play are quite impressive.
However, a large number of them are extremely flawed, so a dedicated client is not going to go away anytime soon.
I have been testing numerous browser based games recently, most of them have half ass graphic's and the inability to re-log back to where you last left off.
And this category of gaming is not going away, as a matter of fact it will see exponential growth during the year 2013. They all seem to have the same business model, free to play at first, and then sell you stuff.
Watch Out !
Don't give your credit card # to anyone !!!!!!!
And run a virus scan after you try any of these supposedly free games.
