Media : If this is social, people are going to like it. Right?

Social is not just a name

I am very much in favor of the social side of Second Life.  I think that is the key feature that Second Life can offer to its residents. Here is what I said last year and reiterated just this month:
-
So I am concerned to read the comments by Cummere Mayo:
-
Cummere is concerned about privacy.  I am not.  But here is the tricky thing about Social.  Cummere is my friend and colleague.  So what concerns Cummere concerns me.
-
Cummere's comments indicate that a number of people are dissatisfied with the handling of profiles.  Now that means to me that there is something wrong.   Because if you are in the social media business, it is important to keep good relations with  the social groups you depend on.
-
So I won't bother with  a discussion of what the social team is doing wrong.  I am delighted that Second Life has finally recognized its potential as a part of the social internet.  I am glad to see Second life snuggle up with Facebook.  I am happy to see my profile on the internet.
-
But if Linden Lab executes this in a way that makes a lot of residents unhappy, I don't  like it at all.  And I don't see it as a good omen for the future of Second Life as social media
-
Making your customers unhappy is not the path to success.

I thoroughly agree - SL needs to reflect, if not lead on social trends. Sadly, and it pains me to say this, LL messed up on this implementation.
