SecondLife : A Brief Look At Recent Advancement's In The 3rd Party Viewer Stable

By Avatar JayR Cela

This past week or two saw some interesting event's taking place in the world of  TPV's available for SL.

The Catznip Viewer integrated a new set of font's for their UI geared towards helping out people with Dyslexia, which I think is a wonderful idea. Having dealt with this myself since I was a child, I am hoping this will soon become a standard feature for all SL viewers.

The Cool Viewer just keeps plugging away, mostly squashing bugs in the base LL code. But this is typical for Henri anyways. This weeks experimental release includes a work-a-round for the Server Side non rezzing prim's after a TP problem, plugged some memory leakage issues, and is continuing to improve upon the Mesh Deformer code and the upcoming Materials Rendering feature.

The Dolphin Viewer has no had no new release's since March 01

The Exodus Viewer nothing new yet, but I think the next release will have a lot of major goodies for everyone once it does.

The FireStorm Viewer  no new release, but for the past two weeks has really updated their Blog with a weekly, Frequently Asked Support Questions report, written very clearly in laymen's terms by Lette Ponnier, of the FS team, it is very well done and quite impressive. Wither you are a FS user or not, this is quite possibly the best thing I have seen happen in SL. I can't even begin to say enough good thing's about Lette's writing style and her ability to really drill down to the nitty gritty of things.

The Kokua Viewer has a brand new version  out ( as of today May 20 ) a number of updated features and bug fixes, that I am sure a lot of  die hard Imprudence fans have been waiting for. It's nice to see them back and working on regular release's again. I hope to get some Open Sim exploring in soon so I'm planning on trying it out.

The Nirans Viewer had two major announcement's last week, along with the usual rearrangement of various aspect's of the UI. #1 a renaming to The Black Dragon Viewer. #2 an announcement that he may be ending development sometime later this year.

The Singularity Viewer nothing new to report here currently.

The StarLight Skin as always continues to enhance the look's and general usability of the Stock and Beta official LL version's, plus a lot more. I have said this before and I will say it again. If you are a person that is happy with the official LL version, ya really owe it to yourself to try this out.

Linden Lab's SecondLife Division : The Recent Third Party Virtual Currency Exchange Debate : Quick Positive Response : This Time

By Avatar JayR Cela

Oh my God !! Quick response from The Lab ?

In dealing with with the abrupt closure of external Virtual Currency  Exchanges. Not only was the problem fixed promptly, they actually kept all of the resident's informed as well.

Finally some one over there at LL seem's to have gotten it !

It's the CUSTOMER ( coughs ) ummm - err  Residents, Stupid ! We like to be informed.

But all joking around aside, I myself was very happy to see the fact the Resident's were kept up to date two days in a row via the main SecondLife Web Page on May 17 and 18. The Lab effectively put to rest all the wild crazy panic and rumors being spread throughout the SL Blog-o-Sphere and related forums promptly.

And they kept Us the Resident's up to date as well. It's about Damn Time !
Thank you. Linden Lab

SecondLife : Virtual Currency : Abuse : Investigation's : The Lab Makes The Right Choice, For Now

By Avatar JayR Cela

The past several day's I have read numerous, article's, post's ton's of stuff about LL releasing a new TOS

I first came across it Tuesday the 7th, after a re-install of my operating systems and the FireStorm viewer, I have to admit I really screwed up thinking something was wrong and posting that when I was trying to log in with FS, I was getting The CoolVL normal TOS log in the first time, that was not the case. I must not of been wearing my glass's :_)

The major change in the TOS deals with virtual currency, in other word's the L$ and how you purchase it. I can not blame The Lab for making this move. It make's sense, they are covering their ass. Any lawyer, as long as they are not half baked in the head, would tell ya the same thing.

Currently, around the world many government's are trying to comprehend, and figure out just how to control Virtual World Currencies, the potential for money laundering in RL is a fact !

My personal feeling at this point is LL made the right decision, just the way they did it really blew Huge Chunk's!! BIGG TIME !!!!!

Years ago, oh let's say back in 2006 the SecondLife.com main web page was very active, had a ton of content, and was a great place to go before you actually logged in with your avatar. It's not the same anymore. And in my mind has become almost worthless.

#1 No notice was given, until the next day, and the link on the main SL web page was down; or overloaded.

#2 It would be nice if professionalism, would override lack of communication to the resident's and fix the darn Main SL Home Page, get someone in there that can do daily update's as to what is happening, what's in the pipeline.

    Keep Us Informed, please.

How To Deal With A Virtual Death : In Virtual Worlds

By Avatar JayR Cela

Ok this can be a tough one, I am speaking from experience, you have this virtual world, and you meet some very cool people, and you have your real life.

Can you keep theme separate ?

I have tried, but I don't think it is possible.

Am I insane ?

Yes !

SecondLife : The New SSA ( fka ) SSB TPViewer's Roll Out To A Good Start : So Far

By Avatar JayR Cela

So Far I have tested ( rather ) thoroughly CoolVL, FireStorm & Singularity, my personal opinion is there is more server related crap to deal with than the client side of things.

The disappearing prim phenomena  is still rampant, no matter what viewer you are using.

But so far all three of the above viewers for SL work great for me on both Win 7 32bit / Mint Linux Mate & Open Box 32bit.

It's hard to tell between a FPS comparison, but I think CoolVL & Singularity come out on top. Wither the difference is noticeable to you or not will obviously depend upon your hardware. I would like to do a through review, but until LL throw's  the switch / LOL / We may as well wait and see, things are still a lil bit screwed up right now.

    Here are the links to......

CoolVL

FireStorm

Singularity

And if ya get a chance to just drop on by and listen to the LL~SL meetings......

I think Oz Linden's Wednesday hour has moved up one hour.
