After 9+ years in SL I'm about to call it quits, revert to a free account and move forward. I love the platform, and all of the recent advancements that have been accomplished, however I see no future left for SecondLife. The platform is on it's way to obscurity.
Ebbe Linden, showed his Poker Hand, and it does not look good, especially for all the folks that invested into it. My current plans are to stick around until December of this year.
My single biggest hope is that Oz Linden will join the club, the man is brilliant. I have no doubt he can make a living in Open Sim.
I will also be making some changes to this blog, and am looking for people interested in expressing their opinions by writing articles that deal with OpenSim and HyperGrid.

Open Sim Viewers and Linux : Whats Available : And CTRL+ALT+F1 HUD Hiding Needs To Be Replaced !! : Permatentaly !!
By Avatar JayR Cela
Open Sim and Hypergrid are here to stay, make no doubt about it. There are just way too many opportunities for entrepreneurs to ignore and not be willing to take advantage of. Marketplaces for easily transferable from one grid to another Virtual Goods are rapidly becoming the norm, and gradually establishing themselves as viable Real Life $$ Money making places of commerce, the most notable being The Kitely Grid Market.
In my travels I find far too few Linux based viewers available, which to me is inexcusable for the simple fact that Open Sim itself including the database is, and always has been based on the Linux platform, of course there are Windows and Mac versions, but all of the heavy lifting work on the back end is done using Linux, unfortunately for all of us Linux fans, the majority of real world computer users are running on a Windows Box, so it only makes sense to develop for a platform with the largest installed user base.
There are 4 Outstanding viewers that come to mind, all of them are well established and have devoted user base's, so it should be no problem finding help within their individual user communities. I am not about to recommend one over the other, all four of them are fantastic choices, it just depends upon what you are comfortable with. If you prefer an old school type V1 style, then Henry Beauchamps Cool VL is an excellent choice, as well as the very popular Singularity. Both of these are widely used in the Open Sim Hypergrid Metaverse. If you have become accustomed to the more modern features first introduced with the V2 style of doing things, then take a close look at FireStorm and Kokua.
One thing I would like to see happen is ditching CTL+ALT+F1 ( the keystroke combination ) for hiding your Onscreen HUDS and various functions within all of these Viewers. It really needs to be Banished To The Depths Of Hell For Ever.
Here are the links you will need, if you wish to further explore your possibilities.

Real Life : KeyStone PipeLine : Bulls Eye Target For Terrorist
By Avatar JayR Cela
This is just my opinion, but the United States need's the KeyStone PipeLine like we need a Punch In The Eye.
If you think about it logically, we should be weaning ourselves off of fossil fuel's to more easily sustainable energy sources.
Screw the Big Oil Companies, they had their run at destroying our environment, and so far have done a rather good job at it. The Saudi's are running scared, terrified that the Holy Grail of $$$$ will evaporate soon.
I'm just venting.
Can you even imagine what a Huge Terrorist Target this monstrosity will create ?

OpenSim : Getting Started : Organizing Your Inventory : FireStorm Viewer
By Avatar JayR Cela
I don't seem to have as much time as I once did to post here on a regular basis, much of that has to do with my loss of interest in the SecondLife platform. However I have been experimenting quite a bit with it's soon to be nemesis OpenSim. I recently decided to settle down in 3rdRock Grid as my home base.
HyperGrid will be the next big thing, forget Oculus Rift and all the hype, thats great for a lot of purposes like engineering and CAD Design for Automobiles and Space Ships, but there is no way in hell I'm about to wear a cumbersome headset, just to hang out and chat with people, socialize and create virtual things. It's just over the top and unnecessary.
Once I made the decision to commit to OpenSim : HyperGrid and 3rdRock something hit me in the head like a ton of bricks, after 9+ years in SecondLife, my inventory is a complete mess, and beyond the point of trying to organize it into something comprehensible and easy to navigate. Couple that with the fact that LL screwed everyone with the last 2 rounds of Terms of Service agreement's, and it will soon be going into the newer version SecondLife2, totally incompatible with the current version of SL, why even bother ?
The point I am trying to make here is. Don't make the same mistakes I did in SL with my Inventory. HyperGrid is very different from SecondLife, first off it is not centrally controlled or operated by a single corporate entity. It truly is the Wild-Wild West of Virtual Reality, not for the faint hearted or those folks comfy in the closed and Walled Garden Approach used by SL. That is a total go nowhere concept in today's internet is everything world.
FireStorm the most popular viewer for traveling the MetaVerse can be a pain in the ass to set up, but by far is undoubtedly the most versatile piece of software currently available for would be VW Travelers. Once you do have it set up properly it is very easy to organize. Upon opening your inventory in FS, you will notice a small suitcase in the lower left hand corner, clicking on it will open a new inventory window, then all there is to it is a simple mater of dragging and dropping your items into the appropriate folder.
Of course it is up to you to determine how you want to organize your stuff, my recommendation ?
If you plan on Grid Hopping organize your newly acquired items into folders named accordingly. 3rdRock / Kiteley / OSGrid etc...

OpenSim : How Many Worthless Object's and Prims Are You Burdening Your OS Provider With ?
By Avatar JayR Cela
Look if you are going to participate in the Phenomenal growth of the OpenSim and HyperGrid Revolution, there are some protocols that you should observe on a regular basis.
Empty your Trash Folder when you finish building, rezzing and deleting objects. Scan your Inventory for unnecessary Items you are not using any longer.

OpenSim & Common Courtesy : Limiting Your Texture Usage
By Avatar JayR Cela
This is an important issue, that I feel is often overlooked by numerous people building in Open Sim. Not all Textures, Sculpties, and Mesh objects are being built ( designed ) with efficiency in mind.
Something that is extremely important when you consider the fact that a number of OpenSim Grids are run by Entrauponears. People that are trying to start a business, and create a viable source of income as a result of their efforts. These folks are the true pioneers of the Metaverse, it is up to us as resident's to respect this fact, and promote building techniques that stress Efficiency.

Internet Service In The US Is A Cruel Joke
By Avatar JayR Cela
It's GREED ! The Cable TV Companies Mantra.
How much Money Can We Milk Out Of Our Customers, and just exactly how stupid are they and our lawmakers.
Let's just bombard them with false advertising and unsubstantiated claims of stellar performance, and tier them into so called entertainment bundles.
If you take the time to actually complain you may be surprised at some better internet deal's you can get, albeit for a limited time, then you just complain again.
I have done this twice in the past 2 years, both times I received a $10 per month discount, and just recently a boost from 3.5 mbps to 25 mbps.
These guys are Crooks and ripping us off blind.
