How Smart is your ( Dumb Ass for Owning One ) Phone ?

By Avatar JayR Cela

Oh boy, I am opening up a can of worms here. The powers that may be please forgive me, I refuse to surrender my life to the Cloud and constant surveillance, therefore I must be some sort of malcontent unwilling to conform to the Mega-Corporate Will of Bend Over and Get Ready for the BIG Screw.

I don't know about you, but there is no way in Hell I will waste money on a so called Smart Phone, they are nothing more than electronic spy's.

So let's talk about how Smart your phone actually is, well recent studies I have read say that about 30% of the cheap ass Android based pieces of crap throwaway once the contract has run out are loaded with Spyware, MalWare, Phishing Scams, Keyloggers, ect... ect...

Now let's talk about Smart Pay with your marvelous hand held devices, OK now every movement you make every purchase, any movement via GPS is recorded in the cloud.

And Government's around the world are putting a lot of pressure on the service provider's to keep the records intact for a minimum of 12 months. The British are the worst of the Descending Totalitarian Leader's Pig's in Disguise, they claim Security and safety will only be achieved by constant surveillance of everything.

Well what the hell, we may as well just up and move to North Korea. How about MicroSoft and Cortana and Windows 10.

FU** everytime I do a Cumulative Update, I need to go back and see what MS in all their Greedy Wisdom has decided to change. Apple is no better. I will never purchase anything from Apple, number one they are the most High Value Company in the entire world, yet they pay virtually nothing in tax's, kinda sounds like the recent USA President Elect ( and Mentally Ill ) Donald Trump, who somehow seems to relish in the fact that he has evaded the tax man for 18 years, and who in his twisted mind seem's to be addicted to Twitter.

I am just Ranting today.

But it is time to WAKE UP People !!

Never Mind / LOL :_)

By Avatar JayR Cela

The newest version of FireStorm ROCKS !!! - Big Time ! I know some OS folks are put off with FS because the viewer is married to SecondLife. However this new version is as close to flawless as it is going to get.

Ubuntu 16.04.x updating with Ubuntu Studio Repositories : Not recommended for the Novice Linux User : Stay Tuned

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well I had really wanted to document the proper procedure of adding the Ubuntu Studio repositories to ChaletOS, I have since determined that unless the reader is familiar with  using the command line and tracking down bug's, it's not be worth the effort.

The reason being that ChaletOS, even though it uses Ubuntu Xeniel repositories, under the hood it is actually Debian 8. This is a big disappointment for me, because once it is done correctly, the system really rocks.

Perhaps one day I will, document the entire procedure, but a lot of it really seems to have something to do with your particular hardware, the version of Ubuntu or one of its fork's, and the fact that Debian is not Ubuntu, Ubuntu is an enhanced Debian, as in Mint is an enhanced Ubuntu, and things can get rather messy if you don't have a firm understanding of what the hell is going on, especially when you start adding PPA's to the mix.

So a generic breakdown of adding Ubuntu Studio to a base Ubuntu based Linux distro ( It should work with Mint Linux just fine ) First things first, Do Not Back Up Your Computer ! Image it !

If you don't understand the difference, then stop right here, or backup all your important stuff first and just go on ahead, download and install Ubuntu Studio.

I'll be back in the next day or so, with either a proper procedure, or some other silly stuff, perhaps a rant. / LOL :_)

See ya soon, and thanks for reading my blog.

OpenSim : Linux and Screen Tearing : The Ultimate Fix : for Nvidia based display graphics

By Avatar JayR Cela

For the past several years I have been wanting to do some in-world filming, however Linux is notorious for it's X-11 Nvidia combination Horizontal  Screen Tearing issues. I'm not speaking about the new upcoming X-11 replacement Wayland, that is a relatively new screen render standard still under heavy development, it looks very promising but in my opinion still a couple of years off before reaching critical mass with all Linux distributions.

A few days ago I ran across an excellent article in the on-line publication Freedom Penguin, by author Matt Hartley, that address's this issue with a permanent fix that actually works. I have tested this on 4 Linux Box's all of them Debian-Ubuntu based, (although it will work with other distribution as well) and thought I should pass along a link so anyone reading this blog can take advantage of his exceptionally well written description on how to perform this extremely easy fix to a seemingly age old problem. You can read it in full by following the link below.

OpenSim Hypergrid : Why Do I still Need Windows 10 : When I have Linux

By Avatar JayR Cela

I gonna start this off by saying if you have Win10 Home Edition, you should seriously consider upgrading to Win10 Pro.

Personally I have no love for Windows10, I use it because I have to for such increasingly decreasing reasons. To me it is a dual boot pain in the ass I only visit on Patch Tuesdays for the ridiculous cumulative update process that usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour or more to complete. Total garbage.

Why do I still need it for OpenSim ?

Good question, that I do not have an answer for, most all the servers I see in OS HG are Linux based. Actually an unofficial count is about 50/50

I just cannot wrap myself around Win10, perhaps it is the same reason i just will never purchase any product from Apple. Each time I do a cumulative update on Win10, I need to go through my privacy settings and see what sort of telemetry settings have been changed back to defaults, of spying on everything I do. Screw these people, I'm tired of the games.

It is such a pain in the ass, and is not even worth keeping the system up to date. And the biggest joke is the only time I actually use Windows10 is on the infamous Patch Tuesday. / LOL :_) So why bother ?

Because there are some programs I use that only work properly under the native environment. I recently heard OZ Linden from Linden Lab ( SecondLife ) make the naive comment that in order for Linux User's to still be able to use voice chat, they should use Wine.

This is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever heard yet from anyone in LL besides Ebbie Linden and his saying Project Sansar will be a big success.

Oz obviously has no idea or has never even used Wine within a Linux environment, he is just rattling off some well known talking or bullet points.

    The bottom line is !!

You do not need Windows.

OpenSim : Linux : Hardware : AMD-Radion or Intel and Nvidia ?

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well, before I touch of a firestorm of insult's, let me just say that AMD makes some great most Bang for the Buck stuff you can buy. But there CPU's always have run HOT !! extreme heat, and the Radeon video cards have usually had lousy driver's, however the new open source versions are proving to be much better than the official AMD versions.

Personally I think that most of their stuff is Meh, who really cares.

I would rather spend the extra money and buy an Intel CPU and Motherboard ( if you can still find one besides a server based version )  and a Nvidia based GPU. Seems as if Intel abandoned the Motherboard business several years ago, so Asus at this point in time seems to be the best bet for reliability, I would steer clear from anything under the GigaByte brand name. EVGA perhaps, but I lost faith in them recently for having shoddy cooling fans on their high end video cards that seem to have a pen-chance for failing  just after the 3 year warranty expires, supposedly this has changed this past year with them switching from a sleeve  design to dual ball bearing based fans, supposedly their Motherboards are really high end stuff. PNY I like this company, everything comes with a 1 year Warranty until you register, then you get 3 years, and they are based in the USA.

If you are into OpenSim and building your own computer, or purchasing a new one, I would avoid anything AMD, or off the wall brand names you have never heard of.

Asus, Intel, Nvidia, PNY

That's my thought's.

OpenSim : Debian 8.x : ChaletOS 16.04.2 + UbuntuStudio :

By Avatar JayR Cela

This may be the best Linux distro package combination I have found so far. ChaletOS 16.04.2 uses the Ubuntu Xenial  Xerus repositories, however it is a Debian 8 ( Jessie ) based flavor of the XFCE Linux desktop environment, is highly customizable ( can easily be made to look like Windows 7 ), extremely fast and a good fit for an aging computer collecting dust somewhere.

The reason I stumbled onto this relatively new Debian fork was by accident trying to find a distro besides Mint with Mate or Cinnamon for my living room TV setup using an old Dell tower Core2 Duo with 4gig ram and a 1gig Nvidia GT730 based card with HDMI audio/video output, and a problem I was having with font scaling automatically adjusting itself post installation of the official Nvidia driver on an older Sony Bravia KDL-40XBR7 television.

Believe me, I had tried dozens, of Linux distributions on this Box in the past year, and none have been as good an experience as ChaletOS, it really breathed some new life into an older computer.

After playing around with it for a while and adding a few things necessary to run the Singularity viewer ( without unexpected random and constant crashing ) and getting the driver installer to work, and a few other minor annoyances, I decided to add UbuntuStudio to ChaletOS, after all they are both XFCE based.

I am so happy with this install, I am about to document how to combine the two, resulting in a very nice OpenSim viewer(s) experience. I don't care what viewer you are using, FireStorm or Singularity, Kokua or CoolVL or Alchemy, you will see a noticeable increase in your FPS performance specs.

I now have this running on 3 box's with a dual boot to a Win10_Pro setup.

Adding the UbuntuStudio meta installer really rounded the whole package out. I will admit it did not go without some major botching things up on my part, thats why I feel it is important to actually document what I did correctly ( and incorrectly )

So stayed tuned, Real Life is hectic at the moment, but I will return !

OpenSim and Linux

By Avatar JayR Cela

The other day I was talking about Linux and OpenSim, as I had mentioned most everything happens on the Windows platform first, if you are like me I don't really care for Windows very much, however there are some things that I need and are only available on that platform.

So let's get back to Mint Linux, if you are new to Linux, you can not go wrong with Mint, it comes in 5 different versions, 4 of them are standard Ubuntu forks, and 1 the LMDE is pure Debian, not recommended for newbee's.

Depending on your computer's hardware you have to make a choice between the XFCE, Mate, KDE or the Cinnamon desktop User Interface. XFCE is the lowest resource hungry followed closely by MATE, both of them are similar enough to Windows 7 you should have no problem getting up and running without much fuss. KDE is a trip, steep learning curve but very powerful and it is resource hungry, it has a large footprint and can tend to slow things down a bit, until you learn it's eccentricities and turn off all of the flashy graphics stuff no one needs, the newest version not so much as the last one, but still if you are new to Linux I would avoid it. Cinnamon is another resource hog and a lot of people compare it to Windows7, personally i don't see the connection, it is definitely unique, and extremely easy to accumulate  yourself with and use, but you will need a fairly powerful box in order to get the fullest advantages.

So to sum things up, if you are new to Linux I am going to definitely recommend XFCE for pure speed, and MATE for the best familiarity ease of use and the closest to a Windows7 experience I have found so far.

If you are looking for an all in one multi media package I have to recommend UbuntuStudio, it is ready to go right out of the box with just about everything you will need for most anything related to creativity, it is based on XFCE and lighting fast with most everything you can throw at it, be sure to stick with the LTS ( Long Term Support ) version ( currently 16.04.x )
