SecondLife : More Kirsten Viewer News : The Nirans Viewer

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well this just keeps getting better and better, it seem's that the Kirsten Viewer even though it currently has one foot in the grave, simply will not, or refuses to go away. Recently a die hard Kirsten fan decided to revive the project under a different name.

Avatar : Niranv Dean of SL has released into the wild a new V3 fork, built on the Kirsten code base. The Niran Viewer. I am not sure if my ageing hardware is capable of running it, but intend to give it a try later on today.

Regardless I know their are a lot of people out there that may be interested in looking into this project. You can follow the progress and download a copy here.

www.my.secondLife.com : Stalkers Paradise ?

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well I guess that just depends upon either how stupid you are, or what your intended purposes in a Virtual Reality World are.

Personally I would not have a RL account on Face Book if you paid me. It is nothing more than a gigantic database, constantly collecting personal information about you.

Now LL want's to do the same, with their : my.secondlife.com web profile page.

Well I guess that is fine for some people, that are using the platform for RL purpose's. My concern is for the Unsuspecting Dimwit's that expose their fantasy RP live's and hap-hazardously mix them together with their Real Live's.

SecondLife : Major Texture Re-Bake Problem's Plague The Grid

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well this problem is completely out of hand, and to the point of being totally unacceptable. Grey Avatar's, Cloud People, Constant Blurry Texture's.

So where does the problem lie ? That's just it ! It's everywhere. It's in the LL Server's and the antiquated Grid Philosophy that LL use's to send information to the client software. It's in the various Open Source Viewer's, it's in your Video Card, it's rampant.

If you are new to Secondife. Get Used To It !

SecondLife : Mesh Clothing : The Parametric Deformer

By Avatar JayR Cela

Yet another CrowdSource funded project headed by Maxwell Graf of RUSTICA Home Furnishings in SL who took it upon himself to get this project started. The Parametric Deformer, basically it will solve the annoying problem clothing designer's are facing when their customer's purchase a mesh garment, only to realize that they must alter their body shape in order for the clothing to fit properly. This has been a well know issue in SL during beta testing for quite some time now, and the Lab has no intention of trying to solve it any time soon, if at all. Maxwell took it upon himself to see what exactly could be done to resolve the problem.

So what is a Parametric Deformer ? Basically it is a sort of invisible cage that hovers just around your body's current shape at an extremely small distance, and has the exact same dimensions. You don a piece of Mesh clothing and it will literally shrink wrap itself around the cage. Pretty darn good idea if you ask me.

SecondLife : Kirsten's Viewer Resurrection ?

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well earlier last week I caught wind of a project that I thought is worthy of passing the word along on. Many Ultra High End SL User's ( Machinima and Photography Buff's ) recently had to endure great lament last month with the abrupt and unexpected cancellation of the Kirsten Viewer. I do not know the details as to why development on this viewer was halted. But apparently some die hard users are determined to resurrect it.

That's right, if you happen to fall within the elite crowd that has the computing and graphic's horsepower capable of actually running this software, this may be your last chance to put you two cent's in ( literally ) to help further development beyond the so called software grave. This is being sponsored through a group called CrowdFunder  http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/investment/the-kirsten-s-viewer-project-480

The goal may be unprecedented, as far as SL Viewer development is concerned, but not un-achievable. $40.000 U.S. to fund development for a period of 1 year, currently $5.000 has already been raised.

More and less

Mister Acacia is online

More on the dev versions of SL's Viewer.

A side note, I'm not going to refer to Viewer 2 or Viewer 3. It's the SL Viewer. V2 was used to note the difference between their old - and now obsolete - V1, but it's easier to say SL Viewer and SL V1.

So there.

The viewer team have done a lot to make this a better viewer than its predecessor. But it still has some bugs. Scrolling is an issue now. It can be very frustrating because pretty much everywhere you would use scroll, you can't. It's painful, and Firestorm inherited it in their latest non-public version.

Another digression - you don't want to use the non-public versions because it means clearing settings and cache on every install. And I install every single day.

The good thing I'm hearing is that LL is going to focus their energies more on existing problems and less on upgrades and improvement. Let's hope they make good on that.

And I got my pwnie :)

The Astra and Singularity Viewers : Strong Ties and Open Sim

By Avatar JayR Cela

Several months ago I had decided to start dabbling in the Open Sim waters. Of course if you look at the O.S. home page, the main viewer recommended is The Hippo Viewer, which I did not care for at all. So I started using Imprudence, another viewer I have never really cared for much either. That being said, I met someone on OSGrid and she recommended I give the Astra Viewer a try. At that time it was at version 1.0, but still much better for building purpose's then either Hippo or Imprudence was. Sadly, I soon got extremely frustrated with OSGrid and Open Sim in general, and quickly forgot completely about them both, and Astra as well.

Anyone that has been following this Blog for a while may recall how much I really enjoyed using the Ascent Viewer. ( Emerald was no longer available ) The last release of Ascent was in October of last year, so eventually I gave up on that too, and became a full time died in the wool Phoenix user.

However something interesting happened the other day, I caught wind of the fact that there was a new version of Astra available. I started scouring around the web looking for a Windows executable, sure enough I eventually found a 1.5.10(2) build. ( don't waste your time looking for it unless you know one of the Dev's, it has since been removed, you will have to compile your own ) But why waste your time ? Turns out the Singularity viewer and Astra are pretty much one in the same. Just take a look at the list of credit's

    ASTRA
Astra Viewer is developed and maintained by the Astra Dev Team ,Siana Gearz, Shyotl Kuhr, Aleric Inglewood and Narv Czervik, with contributions by Henri Beauchamp, Kitty Barnett, Thickbrick Sleaford, Zauber Parecelsus, Wolfspirit Magic and others. Astra is based upon Ascent source code. Credits for Ascent include Hg Beeks, Charley Levenque, Hazim Gazov, Zwagoth Klaar, Qarl Fizz, and others. Ascent is based upon the Inertia source code.

   SINGULARITY
Singularity Viewer is developed and maintained by Siana Gearz, Shyotl Kuhr, Aleric Inglewood and Narv Czervik, with contributions by Henri Beauchamp, Kitty Barnett, Thickbrick Sleaford, Zauber Parecelsus, Wolfspirit Magic and others. Singularity is based upon Ascent source code. Credits for Ascent include Hg Beeks, Charley Levenque, Hazim Gazov, Zwagoth Klaar, Qarl Fizz, and others. Ascent is based upon the Inertia source code.

I knew there was something I really liked about Singularity :_)

I hope this post gets through the lag

Mister Acacia is online

The message sent to the group is still being processed.
If the message does not appear in the next few minutes, it may have been dropped by the server.
Error making request, please try again later.

Why are Linden Lab allowing problems to go unsolved FOR YEARS while spending any time at all on a new viewer?

The rumors are that a replacement system, XMPP, wasn't scalable for the message and user volume SL groups encounter. This after, what, 4 years of fiddle-farting around with it? After already turning down a previous system that was also unscalable?

Chat lag has been around for a very, very, very long time. We saw what appeared to be a fix around June 2011 and lag was almost non-existent. It was amazing to be able to actually communicate at near-real time. Then lag made its way back more fervor than ever. Better than half of my posts just don't make it in. I get that stupid error message. It's only slightly less irritating than if the message said "you're fooked, we deleted your message."

Fix it, Linden Lab
Fix it
Stop developing for a month
Stop add new crap for a month
Focus all that wonderful talent and the fiscal resources you were going to use for developing new crap and put it into fixing the chat system.
Just
Fix
It

New UI, but not enough

Mister Acacia is online

So Like Jay posted, the development version of LL's viewer does sport a new interface. Gone are sidebars, in their place are three configurable button panels along the sides and bottom. Works pretty well.

The nearby chat starts in reduced style, meaning the chat will show up as toasts, or you can expand it and get the old chat history panel.

They put notices to the top right. A big win because that's where they belong. But it's a lose because notices don't stack, they still wind up in the chiclet, which is also in the top right, along with IM chiclets. And IMs show up there, which isn't bad, but you can't dock IMs and nearby chat into the same panel.

And the camera floater is farging huge.

And their awful chalkboard color scheme is still there.

And it's crashing for me while all other viewers are stable. Please don't remind me that it's a development version. Firestorm's preview 1, not even an alpha version, was more stable.

But it's s step in the right direction.

LL Finally Admit's ( Silently ) That The Viewer3 User Interface Is Severely Flawed !

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well it only took the Lab nearly 2 years to finally admit, ( although not publicly yet ) that the original V2-V3 UI, was a really horrible idea. The reason you may not be aware of this, is because it is still in The Development Viewer stage. V3.2.1.xxxxxx

I decided to give it a try today. And it is a Huge Step Forward !! The ludicrous Side Bar and the incredibly stupid slide out dock and un-dock behavior of your selection's is no longer an issue. As you now have simple buttons that act like all other normal pieces of software should. Click on a button, bam that function is available, click on the button again and it goes back to it's resting place.

It should be interesting to see what improvement's Hitomi Tiponi will do with her StarLight skin mod's.
