Getting around in a Linux environment can be a lot of fun. I would encourage anyone with some extra hard drive space to try it out. It will require some sort of familiarity with the Command Line. Once you are feeling your way around and get comfortable with it, an entirely new world will miraculously open before your eyes.
Yes I'm pushing Linux, if ya wanna get hooked, keep following this blog as I explore Sabayon and Debian, and eventually Mint, I'm just waiting until the next release. Debian and Sabayon are Rolling Distro's, Install once, and maintain, Debian is a whole lot simpler to understand than is Sabayon, but I like both of them. So who knows, and sometime around April or June of this year a new LinuxMint with Mate & Cinnamon should be out and about. Installing Mint Linux is a total no-brain required process, Sabayon and Debian require some back end knowledge. If you are willing to learn something new, by all means dive right in.
This Blog will mainly be focused on the Linux Platform, CinnaMateStudio, OS and Game Emulators from here on out. I'm not sure how much time I can devote to SecondLife, OSGrid, or OpenSim but I can assure you that I will be delving into all 3 of them sometime soon.
Keep on reading, I love the fact that people are actually interested in what I am doing, and I really enjoy your comments.
Thanks

I'm Pushing Linux : Ya Wanna Get Hooked ?
By Avatar JayR Cela
Make no doubt about it, I only have use for Windows when necessary. And I cant afford a Mac .
JayR Cela
P.S. If your a real tin foil hat sort of person try Sabayon, :_)
http://www.sabayon.org/
I just had to say that that, maintaining a Sabayon system is something else, it's a pain in the ass, but somehow worth it. / Haa-ha - I guess it just depends on the persons involved.
If you prefer stability and still cutting edge with tested reliability then Debian is a good way to go
http://www.debian.org/
And I can not forget MINT Linux, I got mixed feelings about this Distro, however I am looking forward to the next Ubuntu 14.04 based LTS Release, and that's only 4 months or so away.
http://linuxmint.com/
I am considering that distro for 1 reason / it has Mate and Cinnamon in the repositories. Plain and simple choice for me. But I do like Sabayon and Debian, and I learned Linux on Ubuntu, it would be really kool to have a CMS Distro available for all of the available Linux Desktop Platforms, so for now I'm just planning on running a bunch of how to stuff and video's.
If ya can bear with me, that would be really great, I finally got my health in RL back on track and I got a lot of free time on my hands to work this project through to completion.

Why Isn't My Expensive Sony Blue Ray Player Not a PS-1-2-3 or 4 ? Compatible God-Send ?
By Avatar JayR Cela
Ok this has been one of those things that has been getting under my craw for a long time / and I'm pissed!
I have had really mixed results with buying Sony product's. They make Killer stuff, that much is a given. However if it breaks your pretty much left out in the wild blue yonder trying to find some one willing to fix it for you.
Now here is a question. Why is my $400.00 US Sony BlueRay PLAYER not a PS-1-2-3 compatible game station ?
This makes no sense at all ! Ya go out and buy a top of the line Blu-Ray player for almost half a grand. And all it does is give you confusing menu's with a ridiculous method of navigation from one section to another just in order to watch a fricking movie, and I can't even play a ton of old PS_1_2_3 Games I have.
Emulators abound in the Linux world allowing you to play a crap load of games from Atari 2600 to Sega Dream Cast / Nintendo CUBE / X-Box..............................................
Blhaaa-Blhaaaa-Blhaaaa-Blaaa-Blhaa !!
How about hard-wiring a Linux ROM chip somewhere on the MB along with the emulation software, my god it's a no brainer.
Man no wonder Sony is losing money hand over foot.
Ya would think someone with a brain in their head would of this figured this really small money making idea out.
GRRRR !!!

Linux and Video Gaming : There are No Boundaries : OpenGL
By Avatar JayR Cela
Ok so I'm a nut case hanging out there somewhere on the fringe's of society, but I'm telling ya Linux and Gaming are gonna be who knows what? The Linux gaming community has got to get out of this mindless FPS mentality in order to survive.
It's up to myself and people that firmly believe in open source alternative's to propitiatory lib's - drivers and such, to take a stand and support Open Source.
There are no boundaries now with new OpenGL extensions.
We don't need more DOOM & Quake clones, for crying out loud ! Give us something original, at least a Diablo, WOW, Final Fantasy clone or......
Hey Better Yet !! --- How About a port ?
Linux is not going away !

CinnaMate Studio : Building Your Own Linux Machinima WorkStation
By Avatar JayR Cela
Be it as it may, I'm hell bent on pushing this idea of a free and open source New Linux based Machinima Studio.
I'm calling it CinnaMate for a very good reason, it's based on 2 User Interface designs that suit my needs when combined. Cinnamon the X desktop is incredibly versatile, I see no reason why it can not work cooperatively within a Tablet - Laptop - Desktop scenario. There is unfortunately a drawback, it is currently resource intensive, the son of a gun sucks up GPU cycles like crazy. This is where the Mate UI comes into place, I can do my thing producing in Cinnamon and then do the hard rendering stuff in Mate together with a little bit of KDE and XFCE added in, it's a killer combination.
My logic being, use Cinnamon for the really creative stuff, and for back end rendering you drop back to the Mate UI, and if you really need all the extra horsepower ya can squeeze out of you computer, then there is FluxBox.
I gotta tell ya I am having a absolute blast playing around with this, and its not hard to do. I have had several versions running, on Debian, Sabayon, Mint, all of them extreme ALPHA's / Haa-Haa -that's half the fun
The way I look at it is Linux is a set of building blocks, an erector set of sorts, you take a basic spin from a solid distro, and put together the various modules necessary to accomplish the end goal.
I'm getting a little fat headed here right now / but here are some instructions for a basic build of CinnaMate Alpha on Sabayon Linux 14.01
PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING
Download and install : Sabayon 14.01 at http://mirror.clarkson.edu/sabayon/iso/main.html
I recommend a spare hard drive / partition / computer - whatever you do / don't try this on your your main rig. :_)
Ok so I'm figuring ya got this far and your still with me. That's encouraging, however since this is Sabayon Linux your gonna need to do a few things before proceeding any further, when your finished doing this, and if you still have the stomach for some adventure come on back. I'll begin to walk you through a CMS built from scratch.
So before you go any further PLEASE READ this.

If ya made it this far and ya know how to get to a root terminal / have at it :_)
# equo install mate-1.6.0
// Then used rigo to install extra mate packages
// Ok so that stuff is out of the way, now i need to install some stuff I cant live without.
# equo install konsole
# equo install kate
# equo install kdenlive
# equo install khelpcenter-4.11.4
# equo install highlighting-kate
// Ok that got all the KDE stuff I wanted.
// at that point i rebooted into Mate changed screen resolution and checked to make sure
// bzimage & kernal matched
# equo eselect bzimage list
# equo eselect kernel list
// both should matched
// OK next deal is to set up the generic video driver correctly / in most cases it should // be automatic for the majority of computers produced within the past 9 years or so.
// Propriety drivers *NVIDIA-ATI-INTEL* your on your own there. Good Luck & Be Patient.
# equo eselect opengl list
// If you see xorg-x11*
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// *note the " * " next to x11
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// if you were lucky enough you may have seen something like this
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// jayr@action4 ~ $ su
// Password:
// action4 jayr # eselect opengl list
//Available OpenGL implementations:
// [1] ati
// [2] nvidia *
// [3] xorg-x11
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
As you can see it has correctly identified my GPU architecture / if it's not the right one is very easy to revert to the generic driver / however you may have to go into complete command line mode from the boot rescue login option / if thats the case just follow the proper procedure to login with your ROOT password and
# eselect opengl list
// this will get you a list of options
// go for the xorg-x11 selection for now / until you can figure out your video driver
// issues / you can do that by
# eselect opengl set 3
// please note your numerical selection may differ from this example
// in order to test it
# eselect opengl list
// OK my next step is to install a couple of XFCE4 & a few other X-Utilitities /
# equo install xfce4-screenshooter
# equo install xfce4-mixer
# equo install xfburn
# equo install xfe
# equo install audacious
// Now we are going to want a ton of plugins
// So get ready as I walk us through this
// unfortunately we are gonna need Flash and ShockWave
# equo install www-plugins/adobe-flash-11.2.202.232
// pease note that the actual Flash player numbering may differ
// I am really hoping that the LightSpark project will take off /
// Gnash seems to be dead in the water
// and I am sick and tired of Flash / LOL :_)
// anyways you should be able to figure it out
// now is probabably a good time to install the QuickTime Libs as well
# equo install libquicktime
// OK now a bunch of Gstreamer stuff needs to be added, and your gonna have to do that later via RIGO
// there are a ton of other VST - Ladspa -LV2 plugins in the repositories / we can get them later
// for now we are just going to install the Cinnamon desktop UI
# equo install cinnamon-2.0.12
// This should get you up and running // Is Try at your own risk
I'll be posting some pictures and video's this weekend, and throughout the week.

CinnaMate Studio : Conundrum : Sabayon - Debian - Mint ?
By Avatar JayR Cela
Well I have to say, I'm at a loss trying to decide what main Distro of Linux to use for this project. On one hand I absolutely love Sabayon, but it is a total pain in the ass to set up configure and maintain. Then on the other hand Debian is pretty much brainless and easy to get along with, both of them depending upon your familiarity with Linux in general. And along comes Linux Mint, I been round and round that block time and again, and will most definitely wait until the next LTS release which will be based upon Ubuntu 14.04
So heres the general story, I have 2 and soon 3 PC's available for testing, debugging, etccc... This is consuming quite a bit of my time, quite a bit more than I expected. Haaa-haa, jokes on me. I am determined to make this work. So I can not promise anything, but I am looking for help, especially in the department of creating a distributable ISO
If you are into virtual worlds, gaming, machinima and Linux, please feel free to drop me a line at JayR.Cela@gmail.com

CinnaMate Studio Fun Shot 1 / LOL :_)
By Avatar JayR Cela
Please bear with me as I experiment with this odd ball OS_UI creation I am working on, it is completely blowing my mind, I am expecting some newer hardware soon ( my stuff is ancient ) However my whole intention over the next several months is to generate some excitement. I got a new video.
Haa-Haaa
JayR Cela :_)
I'm still in SecondLife for reasons of just still being here. I feel there are other grids worthy of exploring. And other machinima based platforms available for exploration and I also firmly believe the opportunities are boundless. So no big deal.
My CinnaMate Studio Project is a work in progress. / LOL / One thing I can tell ya is anything can happen! / The main goal is, figure out a way to sell the knowledge of services only a true open source information based society can provide.
I have a goal with CinnaMate Studio, Creativity for any one interested at giving it a try.

CinnaMate Studio : Starting from Scratch with Sabayon 14.01 SpinBase
By Avatar JayR Cela
This time I have no pictures or videos, I have decided to go with Sabayon for a number of reasons that I can not really rationally explain, all common sense tell's me to stick with Debian. However I am just in the process of installing Sabayon 14.01 on a test machine, the Spin Base version, currently have completed all updates, and installing FVWM-Crystal as the Window Manager.
I should have a few screenshots soon.

Virtual Worlds : CinnaMate Studio Alpha 3 in the works : Bottom Up Rebuild
By Avatar JayR Cela
My adventures creating a Linux based Machinima Studio Distribution has been an absolute blast so far. I have been rather silent as of late while I wait for my hair to start growing back / LOL - I keep pulling it out of my head from time to time :_) / switching from Debian to Sabayon, then back and forth several times has left me in a somewhat unexpected predicament. I like both, and have not yet been able to determine which path to follow. Regardless building a stable ISO distribution will require a ground up Base Spin installation with incremental upgrades documented and tested accordingly. At this point in my life I certainly do have the spare time to devote. So I intend to start from scratch, along the way I am hoping to show a few video's.
It's fun, I like it.
