LL: Let's Communicate about Second Life Everywhere but Second Life

By Cummere Mayo

Amanda Linden released a new post on the official blog today. In it she laid out the new rules for use on the forums, blogs, and elsewhere. These rules are both more strict about speaking about topics that don't involve SL, supposedly will end the massive abuse against other residents found throughout the forums. One of the worst bits about the new guidelines is that criticism of LL will be invariably termed under the flaming guidelines, and that we are not allowed to question the moderation of posts which means that the moderators, some of which already abuse their positions, will be more free to do so.
In addition despite the intense opposition of both SL members and of Facebook members, Amanda announced that Facebook is still the place to get some of the best updates about Second Life. Additionally she provides a long list of twitter threads to follow. An entire fricken list!
In facebook there are roughly 115,000 fans of the second life facebook page. Scanning through the first 50 pages of fans, almost 4/5 are accounts made using SL names, a blatant violation of Facebook TOS. Whats even more insane is more then a few of those accounts are from people that have multiple accounts on facebook, one for each Second Life alt.
This has not gone unnoticed in facebook. There are groups devoted to petitioning to get all Second Life linked or named accounts banned, to IP ban Linden Lab, to getting the Second Life fan page removed, and even one to get listing Second Life anywhere in your account automatic grounds for account termination. These groups combined have more then three times the number of fans of the Second Life page. And one of them is within a few thousand of passing Second Life on its own.
If telling us to watch facebook wasn't bad enough, Amanda provides an entire list of twitter accounts we should watch. Not one, not even two, but an entire list. And in addition, we should follow e-mail lists, a half dozen forums, the knoweldge base AND the blogs. All told we need to watch almost two dozen differant channels just to stay caught up with whats going on. (Thats just taking the five main blog channels, the five main forums, Facebook, the six most useful email lists, only the main twitter channel, and the user groups.)
Out of those onlyy the user groups are actually IN Second Life. In fact Twitter and Facebook aren't even owned or hosted by Second Life.
Finally, even our one outlet for getting bugs and feature requests addressed is being made less useful. Instead of asking the makers of jira to add a feature to vote against items, LL is deciding to force us to watch items we are interested in the outcome in order to get any intrest. Which is designed not to allow better gauge what is important as it is to discourage users from using the Jira.
After all the progress in communication that has been made by Linden Lab in communications, this is a huge step backwards. In fact, this almost single Handel destroys any real hope of good communication through the use of information overload.
If LL was serious about communication they would consolidate some of their methods of communication, they would drop the fiasco of Twitter and Facebook and start opening lines of communication within Second Life itself. Chat groups within SL to get direct user feedback, forcing lindens to actually spend even just an hour a day on an alt inside of one or more of the communities within SL, and making each linden hold office hours in addition to the new user groups would go a LONG way towards truly meaningful communications...

SecondLife "End Slavery Now"

By Avatar JayR Cela

I'm sure I'll catch some flak over this post, but I don't really give a rat's butt if I do or not. I intend to make a point. Slavery is alive and well in Real Life, the fact that Virtual World's allow, and in some case's, promote such behavior, is and should not be an acceptable form of self expression.

Yes, Virtual Reality is just that, "Virtual" It's not real. Or is it ? So the argument goes, who care's and what difference does it make ? Don't misunderstand me here. If your In-World RP involves questionable practices, which can now easily be exposed via the new Web Profiles in SL. Let me just give you this to think about.

Do you really wish to be associated, with this sort of information, publicized, and available on the Web due to your private, and personal Virtual World practice's.

What you do in SL or any Virtual World, is your own business. To a point. The fact that we now have pre-18 year old children allowed onto the Main SL Grid, is disturbing to me. And with the current state of total confusion at LL dealing with Web Profile's, OMG !

Tech: Software in social development. Phoenix

Software in social development.
-
Selby Evans (AKA Thinkerer Melville)
-
Phoenix has a viewer support group in Second Life, founded  by Ed Merriman.  Phoenix has now posted a pre-beta version of its Viewer 2, and is developing for the Hypergrid.
-
-

-
So I am taking Phoenix  and its work more seriously than before.  I joined that group, Phoenix Viewer Support.  I can follow the discussion even though I am not running the pre-beta.  And I saw a new twist in the future.  A new form of creative collaboration.  A new disruptor for software development.
-
Cloud-sourced collaboration.  User prototyping.
-
The Phoenix Viewer Support group is as chatty as any group I have been in.  And they are providing help to users.  But  I think the devs are working the group too.  So the users are providing help to the devs.
-
What kind of help can users provide to devs?  Rapid prototyping.   Develop the user interface with ongoing user interaction.  And develop the instructions at the same time.  Whatever the users don't understand, you have to fix either in the interface or in the instructions.  If you develop both in parallel, you get to choose where you put the fix.  My preference is to fix the UI if possible.  That cuts things out of the instructions.  And makes the users happy.
-
So the users are helping the devs develop toward User Satisfaction.  Of course, one of  the S-tech principles is that people who are involved in the construction of something develop a sense of ownership.  They become committed  to the result.
-
 -
So the people who are now getting help from the Phoenix Viewer Support group are preparing to be evangelists for Phoenix.  And the Phoenix devs are learning to see things from the standpoint of users. Software co-creation.

The Snowstorm group has also been making a serious effort to build bridges to the users.

"I have to admit, although things seem to be moving a bit on the slow side, but this is a very well organized, and dedicated group of people.  Thats right, Monday thru Friday you can download a fresh copy of the upcoming next version of the SL Viewer 2."
-
Where does that lead?
The Phoenix Viewer Support has developed a much more powerful solution.  Crowd sourced.  Crowd sourced help.  Crowd sourced focus group.  Free.  Sustainable.  If I had to bet now which viewer will be dominant next year, I would put my money on Phoenix.
-
That will astonish some people, because I have been outspoken on the benefits of Viewer 2.x.
-
I still use Viewer 2.x, and will till JayR tells me that Phoenix has a v2 version that is suitable for production use.
-
But I am talking about the future. The future is not about the product we have now.  It is about the development technology we are using now.  The development technology I see potentially emerging from the Phoenix Viewer Support group is s-tech at its best.  Agile on steroids.  That's why I would bet on it.
-
"Potential means you ain't done it yet."  And maybe Linden Lab will figure out a way to use the same s-tech.  Phoenix is open source and open dev.  Linden Lab can adopt the Phoenix code, so it does not have to be far behind Phoenix unless it chooses to be.
-
But that is the subject for another post.

Phoenix FireStorm Preview 2 Due by February 28 "New Feature's"

By Avatar JayR Cela

The list of stuff happening within the Phoenix FireStorm development team is quite extensive. So much so, I can not possibly post an article outlining all the proposed enhancement's. I can however point you to the latest Phoenix Hour interview, conducted by Rezzed TV

Imprudence ( Kokua ) Virtual World Viewer "About to Bite the Dust ?"

By Avatar JayR Cela

Well I figured it was only a matter of time before this sad day. Quite frankly, I have never cared for the Imprudence viewer much. Other than the fact that it was great for Grid Hopping, it always seemed to me as rather clunky, slow and just confusing. Especially the redesign of the Pie Menus. So I will not miss it's availability.

Before anyone jumps all over me, please read the web page. http://blog.kokuaviewer.org/

May Imprudence R.I.P. ? Lets hope not.

SecondLife "New Phoenix 1.5.2.9xxx Viewer" To be Released this Weekend

By Avatar JayR Cela

Whoo Boy, today I had two major and wonderful things happen in my VW Life. I actually got a Tweet from Rod Linden, apparently he is reading this blog, witch is very KOOL. And more importantly to me, I finally met Jessica Lyon, PM of the Phoenix Viewer, and Phoenix FireStorm Project. According to her, Phoenix 1.5.2.9xxx is set fore release within days. I will have an update as soon as the news hit's. This is a Bug Fix Release, so no new features.

Yesterday I did a post about Phoenix 1.5.2.834, geared towards the SpotOn3D grid, today i used it extensively, and spoke together with Jessica about it.

It is a Beta, and the only real difference, is the ability to easily grid hop between SpotOn3D and SL during the initial login process.. So I guess we are all waiting for the new version of FireStorm.

Nothing to report on yet. But a sneak peak is just around the corner. :_) Stop by tomorrow for an up-date.

Slavery in SecondLife " An Abomination to Human Rights"

By Avatar Jay Cela

Some of the people reading this, may not want to hear what I intend to say here soon. But Slavery trade in RL is Alive and Well, and a real money maker in the Real World. The fact that various Virtual Worlds allow this sort of fantasy realm to exist, is an abomination to all of Mankind.

And yes I am about to target Restrained Love TPV Viewers, BDSM Sim's and Groups soon. I realize this tends to be rather controversial, within a Virtual World ~ or ~ Society. But never the less. I intend to present you with fact's. Facts that you may or may not wish to accept or  ignore, or even come to grips with.

How Does Your Virtual World Role Pay affect you, your loved ones,  and The Real Life World Around You !

Mystery Phoenix Virtual World Client Viewer "Phoenix 1.5.2.834 ( Beta ) Hyper Grid Ready

By Avatar JayR Cela

About 2 weeks ago, I had mentioned that a new Bug Fix Version of the popular SL based Phoenix  1.5.2.818 Viewer was scheduled for a "Bug Fix", release soon. Also a custom version, 1.5.2.834 ( Beta ) for a new Open Sim Grid,  SpotON3D was being developed specifically for that platform. I say specifically, because SpotON3D is part of the expanding Open Sim HyperGrid Metaverse. A loosely knit confederation of sort's, that allows for inter grid transport between various Virtual World's ( Grid Hopping ) based on the Open Sim Server Software Platform.

And of course, LL, currently want's nothing to due with this sort of rubbish. ( At least in the Lab's opinion, it is wrongly considered to be rubbish )

I find it rather ironic, that the current Hyper Grid Transport Protocol, can find it's root's deeply buried and forgotten within the dark, musty and  locked  ( "We Never Said That" ~"Sealed Vaults of Linden Lab" ) To be completely mind boggling.

"InterOP", originally  proposed by SL Avatar, "IBM's ~ Zha Ewery", and conceived, together with help from the former "Zero Linden", during the height of LL's superbly executed fiasco, and failed, attempt to attract Big Corporate Customer's, with the now defunct SL Enterprise Server product.  ( That eventually bit the the well deserved dust last year, stands as proof  )  Heck, even Sun Micro Systems ( now Oracle ) and Cisco Systems, were somewhat loosely involved at that time.

Myself and may others truly believed, the Lab was finally ready to go main stream. Sorry to observe, and say, LL, as I see it, will inevitably, follow in the dank footsteps of the once all mighty, and all so well forgotten, AOL, and Compuserve. "May they Rest in Peace"

They both suffered a failed, stagnated , slow, painful, and shameful death, by denying the inevitable fact's.

"The Internet is not a "Walled Garden" "Rod Linden, I hope your are reading this"

I truly love SL, cherish my SL partner, and close in-world friends. But V2 is a excellent example, of various, flawed and miss guided decisions made by people that never had the qualification's to make them in the first place.

An Example is easily confirmed by attending various LL in-world meetings. These office hours area's are not only lackluster, run of the mill places, set in  crappy, unimaginative settings, and coupled with the fact that most all LL employee's attending, said meeting's, rarely or never even bother to change their Avatar appearance or outfit's.

In other words. "They are Code Junky's" I doubt if any seldom even bother to venture out behind their office cubicles, and actually explore our user created Virtual World, or bother to experience this wonderful imaginative place so many of us refer to as home.

Instead, they seem to exist in an Abomination and Dismal Viewer2 world. Regrettably that  is currently being forced down upon us.

The User interface is a horrendous example of something gone completely wrong. And in my personal opinion *A tremendous piece of Crap

Before i ramble off into one of my common and, well know rant's. I would like to share something with you.

This morning, I did some rummaging around, and  managed to find this picture in my SL backup archive's, of the first "By Special Invitation Only"successful InterOP ( now called "Hyper Grid" due to protocol changes ) Grid Hop's between the main SL Grid and one set up by IBM and several other Open Source associates.

This discussion however, will be better served in an upcoming post, Selby and I have recently been discussing. As I continue my crusade, of unrelenting Bashing, and Praise of the Lab, for inexcusable mistakes, made with Viewer2. I sincerely hope you continue to follow this Blog, as myself, and fellow contributors post the facts, you may not read elsewhere.

This new Open Sim Grid aptly named "The New Continent" and was to herald in a new agreement between Inter World cooperation with LL and the newly forming Open Sim ~ Open Grid consortium. But alas it's fate was to be soon, swallowed and forgotten shortly afterwards, around spring 2007 or 2008. ( It has been a long time, and I simply do not recall the exact date )

So back to the matter at hand. This new revised version of the Phoenix Viewer. So far it is currently available to the public via SpotON3D's website only. I logged in, created an account and downloaded the client. ( Note: you must already be a member, or register a new account, before gaining access to the download area ) As of this morning Phoenix 1.5.2.834 is not yet available on the Official Phoenix website.

Here is the Web Site Log In Screen
You'll need to accept the Tos, In order to download the software, and log in.

As you can see, it looks very much the same as the standard Phoenix Viewer, with one major exception, a Grid log in selector, with preset's for SpotON and SecondLife. I decided to give the SpotOn3D world a try first, created a standard preset Avatar, and quickly located located 2 free-bee stores.

Yes that is me.  Represented with a Male Avatar, my Blog's profile clearly states, ( if you have taken the time to read it )

"Race~Gender~Species Have No Meaning in a Virtual World" My in world Avatar does change gender, and species      from time to time. But my personality always remains the same"

The Big Question remained, would it work with SL ? I logged out from SpotOn3D, and preceded to make the appropriate client adjustment's in preparation for a trip into the walled garden of SecondLife. ( Do you remember Compuserve ?  How about the once mighty AOL)

Ok, now that I have stringently teased you with the draw. I will be testing the new Phoenix 1.5.2.834 viewer tomorrow morning. Stop back on by for a first hand look.

Hey LL, Can I have my Privacy Back?

by Cummere Mayo

In the past few weeks a trend is sweeping though the forums, the jira, the blogs, and through office hours. That trend is Second Life users demanding their privacy back.

First came the rebellion against the new version of web profiles as people objected to their real life tabs being displayed and with the mandatory widgets, particularly the infamous spyware tool known as the Facebook Like button. People grew more upset when they realize their OLD profiles had also had widgets and tools to trade them and that LL had never really disclosed the fact that for over two years we have had unprotected profiles.
The reaction was swift and furious with residents demanding that widgets be made opt-out, opt-in, or removed all together; profiles get more security or be moved back to in-world only; and majorly slammed LL for the breaches of privacy.

Sadly several people went on a mission to like and link SL profiles to Facebook and now the very people that pointed out the risks are seeing them firsthand. People are facing divorces or, like me, job loss because of these massive breaches of security.

Next came a revival of the push to get the LSL online exploit fixed for once and for all, this brief push was overshadowed by users finally having enough with a more invasive, if often inaccurate, system that brags about breaking the TOS by collecting Ip addresses, installing cookies, and then attempting to link avatars as alts. This system marketed as a supposed anticopybot system (and yet by thier own stats has identified less then .002% of the alts to be actual copybotters), includes a hud that has complete access to an off-world database that people use to find and stalk the alts of people. This system is known as Redzone, and people want it and others like it banned. Especially since it has proven itself to be a great stalking tool. In fact on thier own forums Redzone specifies the hud version was made especially for people that wanted to trace and find alts of people on land they didn't own.

The opposition to privacy has been kind of haphazard and very accusatory and led by some well known stalkers and the owners of Redzone and seems to be pretty much variations of "I should have the right to know who your alt is," "You must be doing something wrong if you don't want people to know who you are/what you're doing," and my personal favorite, "If you want Privacy you shouldn't log on the Internet." None of these arguments has any real merit and only seem to come from people that are unhealthily obsessed with knowing what other people are doing.

Already, other grids are looking at the opportunity to cash in. Inworldz and Opensim have much more stringent privacy policies with better enforcement. If there is one thing that can be learned, the majority of LL users still want thier privacy!

SecondLife "Mesh Grid Meeting Hit By Griefer Attack" "Screen Shots"

By Avatar JayR Cela

Wow this was totally unexpected. This afternoon I had decided to load up the  SL V2 Mesh Development Latest Build Viewer, and attend a meeting on the Beta Grid.

Thing's started out pretty much normal, with quite a few people in attendance. The typical question and answer session. Some of the standard V2 issues were discussed, like memory leaks, crappy camera control, and the UI in general. These however did not take up the majority of the meeting's time. Ton's of very serious question's were asked and answered.  When will Mesh hit the Main Grid ? Will large prims come first ? Will LL or Individuals be sued for ripping IP protected Mesh content and uploading to the SL Grid ? So many thing's to digest, I made a copy of the transcript and need to read it over before I can supply any actual announcements.

What really flipped me out, was just as the Office Hour was about to adjourn, We were GRIEF-ED.

That's correct, some screwball Fire Bombed the meeting,
                                              LOL !!

After the initial hilarity subsided, the flames extinguished, and presumably the prankster forever banned, everyone had a good laugh, said goodbye, and went on with their day.
