I think we have already experienced pretty much what is possible in SL. Take for instance, we can finally cross simm borders without much of a problem. The Materials and predictive logarithms used within the new SL viewer work extremely well. Everything seems to be running along at full steam ahead.
SL is rather old technology, the fact that it has finally been pushed to this extreme is an admirable feat.
So what's next for SecondLife ? Hopefully all the best, I am however still uncomfortable with creating anything here and the current state of the TOS terms giving LL complete irrevocable copyright, I do believe this will eventually backfire on them.
